I have a 2007 MBE. Once in a while truck wont start right away. I have brand new batteries and I'm getting 14 volts on my dash while running. Took it to a good repair shop and they said they found a suspect wire on the ignition and replaced it and charged me $500. When I try to start the truck I'm getting power to the dash but it doesn't turn over. I wait a while and it starts with no problem. This happens a couple of times during my route. I just need to verify the problem because the shop says they need complete break down before they fix the problem. Thanks

Just offhand, sounds like the starter solenoid has gotten some burn spots. There's a lot of things that could be involved, of course. Maybe the Freightliner shop is a good idea.
-
Could be your starter has a flat spot in it, or also I have seen starters when hot from the engine running not want to go. Wait until it cools and it engages no problem. I think you have a starter issue.
-
That makes sense. Thats why Peterson couldn't duplicate the problem because the truck is just sitting and when I take it out on the road it starts acting up because the starter gets hot from the engine. Nice one! Thanks

swap starter with COPG (clutch over planetary gear) starter. It starts engine much better even with bad batteries. I worked in company with MB Actros fleet. All trucks were with COPG starters....! Really good starters!
-
Yep sounds like starter is getting hot.
-
There should be a shield around the starter protecting it from the engine heat. Is that still in place? Mine got reversed somehow and was on the wrong side.
-
No any shield. When starter goes bad it does not start when hot...
BTW, what brand is starter? MB used Delco-Remy, Bosch, Mitsubishi...Last edited: Oct 7, 2014
