Thanks for all the responses and condolences.

Based on what's been posted here (not had a chance to call a FL dealer), it sounds like the battery box was indeed either on the Driver side or between the rails as the APU was located on the passenger side under the bunk area.

My parent's tractor clipped the left rear end of a tractor trailer, that had just merged onto the highway, with the front right or passenger front end of their truck. This would seem to debunk (no pun intended) the investigating trooper's theory that the battery box was pushed into the right side gas tank.

So what could have caused the their tractor to immediately catch fire so quickly that they could not escape the cab of the truck in time?

Sorry for your loss. Losing your parents is hard no matter how it happens. APU's are almost always located on the right side of a truck. That's something to look into also. I know this won't help in the healing process but APU electrical wires, coolant lines and fuel lines could all could have contributed to a fire.

Years ago I witnessed a truck hit a guard rail and rupture fuel tank the Sparks from rubbing guard rail had truck in flames before it stopped another time saw a car clip a truck in the steer tire which somehow broke the axle and tire flew off which caused the fuel tank to rub on pavement and ignite .. Sorry about your losses

Ruffrider, you are more right than you know. There was an incident about 3 years ago where their APU just caught fire without the benefit of close encounter with another tractor and nearly the entire unit had to be replaced.

I should know by the end of the week whether the collision or the fire got my mom.

Well, we can put this thread to rest. The answer to why they didn't make it out is in the autopsies.

Mom died from a blow to the head. Since she was most likely in the sleepy, she never knew what hit her.

Don't have the official word on my stepfather, but if his injuries are as bad as mom's he died on impact or shortly there after. Only, he saw it coming. :-(

I'm still left with how the accident happened. It's clear, even without the fire, the collision was tremendous.

For those of you who pray, please pray the DNA results come back sooner than normal. I would really like to have my stepfather home before Thanksgiving.

Thanks to everyone for your condolences and responses.
