I'm currently driving a 2014 Cascadia evolution. It has a dd15 engine with `124132.2 miles. I keep having this recurring issue where the engine shuts down without warning while driving but after spinning it about twice it cranks back. It's been to the shop three times. The last time I got it out of the shop it ran with no problems for little over a month but this afternoon it starting doing the same thing again. What it does is it just stops pulling and you press the accelerator but it is unresponsive then it shuts down. This is usually preceded by the truck jerking about once or twice like it is getting some type of bad electrical connection. It has no pattern. Sometimes it runs all day and does not do this then other days like today it acts up. Any type of info would be much appreciated.

battery power wires and ground wires run from starter are to MCM small connector
-
btw, any fault codes? may be shut off valve ore low rail pressure?
-
No it doesn't have any fault codes but I will definitely check that
-
does engine shut down fully ore just idles?
Any fault codes in FR (it is called ADM ore VCI unit on non MB trucks), this is cab drive control ECM near clutch pedal.
If MCM is not powered VCI throws fault code about propriate can failure. BTW, Mercedes uses "tolerant" CAN tranceivers that work in single wire mode with quater speed.
If no VCI codes (its ID is MID128, MCM has no SAE ID, it supports SPN codes, like in Europe), u probably have problem with KL15 relay in Grumd modul (it is ignition power relay). Try to change it. Ignition power on cab ECM and MCM shares one wire. If this power fails - no fault codes, engin shuts dowl like with ignition key -
It shuts down fully
-
BTW... different names of cab ECM. In 90s MB called it FMR, later FR (farzeug regulerung), for non MB vehicels they used to call it ADM, from early 1 to modern ADM-3 (it supports EOBD, J1939, CAN-2, ISO9141 and J1708).
This unit was called VCI on pre Cascadia trucks and it was located in pass side pillar (there were long wires to dash switches and gas pedal) and they relocated it in dash in clutch pedal area.
Not it is called CPC - common powertrain controller. And especially for USA they renamed this system with two controllers to DDEC-10!
Difference of new CPC (ADM) with previous - EOBD support and support of BlueTeck ECM (ACU - aftertreatmet control unit - DEF ore DPF ore DPF+DEF (EPA2014/Euro-6). CPC may limit torque (40%) and speed if aftertreatment system fails.

it is for understanding this system.
Ok. U see, that if MCM power supply fails - CPC throws propriate datalink code. If CPC power supply fails - MCM idles only ore runs in limp home mode (1200 rpm).
So if u have no codes, but engine stops, check ignition power supply problems, like relay ore fuse.
Cascadia does not run smoothly, it is rought shaker like a columbia, so relays fail sometimes (no this problem with Actros with the same engine, only with cascadias, argosy and atego/axor/M2).
So try to swap relays, reinstall relevant connectors and fuses. -
really u need DDDL 7 ore later, I use DDDL-8 and MB Star Diagnise C4.
Mercedes tool is better, but too expencive.I had to purchase it becouse I work on other Daimler Vehicles and DDDL may be used only for powertrain system -
Ouh, forgot to say
MCM
Kl 15 (ignition) - pin #7 on MCM small connector,
KL 31 (ground, two brown wires, running to starter ground) pins #5 and #6
KL 30 (battery powerm two red wires, secured with nut on starter battery wire) - pins ##11 12
CPC power supply
Connector X2 (ST2),
1 - Battery power (kl30),usually red wire
2 - ground (kl31), brown wire
3-ignition (kl15)
use 21wt bulb to check power and grounds, with poor contanct DVOM reads voltage, but under load circuit may fail, so check wiring under load of bulb.
