we have 4 2012's, 4 2013's and 4 2014's.
all our trucks do it. just turn the key and all you get is click. it eventually fires up. but man, i'm surprised the tumblers in the ignition aren't worn out yet.
sometimes it hits the first time, but most times it takes 20 turns of the key.
anyone else have that problem? what was it, and was it covered under warranty. getting real tired of the problem. i'm about to hook up my own remote push button switch.

it is the solinoid on the firewall
cheap fix
at least on the older fld's -
Did you try turning the key on and waiting a few seconds before trying to start? I know the truck I drive, if you hit the key and go right to start it will click. Gotta turn it on and wait until the gauges cycle
RERM Thanks this. -
All new cummins will sometimes do this, I thinks the computer. Sometimes I have to wait for the gauges to sweep and do their checks, etc. If it pauses and I hold the key in start position it starts cranking in maybe 5 seconds.

the wait for the gauge sweep sometimes works. but most times don't.
i've tried everything but the sit and hold method.
haven't really looked under the hood yet. so have no idea if it's a relay or a solenoid or if the truck has both. hasn't really bothered me till lately. getting worse and on my nerves. i'm starting to swear at it. -
I'm not familiar with those trucks. But the solenoid on the firewall may only engage the solenoid on the starter. Does the starter have a solenoid on it?? Our starters have a large solenoid on the top of the starter. We have had this same problem on our Kenworths. This larger solenoid on the starter has two plates inside of it. There is a magnet that pulls these two plates together. The smaller solenoid engages this larger solenoid. These plate allow the juice from the batteries to travel into the starter. These plates wear and eventually the magnet has trouble getting the plates together or arcing will where the surface. Then you get the click, click, click, however many clicks, then start when the plates finally get together. You can also bump the starter with a winch bar and they'll normally always hit off until you can replace the solenoid.
Do not know if those are the same as ours but if so, you might want to check this. They are a pain to get to, without removing the starter, but can be done. Might be worth checking. -
Check starter ground, had one with bad connection at frame. Wouldn't start till connection heated up enough to make contact
