lately in the last 3 weeks, as I sit idling my 06 freight runs a 220
temperature but as I get going down the road it goes back down to
    180. anyone with this problem? I've changed the water pump, thermostats
and had my radiator flushed. the shop said they detected no leaks but at times
anti freeze seems to disappear from the reservoir. any help would be appreciated.

If you loosing coolant, this is head gasket problem or EGR.

Sounds like a failed fan. If it was a dirt clogged radiator it wouldn't get better once moving.

Hi lyte, welcome aboard. Sounds like a plugged radiator, either with dirt and bugs on the outside, or mineral deposits on the inside and flushing won't do it. Years ago, we used to do a thing called "rodding the radiator", which meant, you took the top tank off, and ran a thin piece of welding wire through the tubes, that would be plugged with deposits. Now with radiator tubes as thin as a dollar, you can't do that anymore. The coolant loss, I think, is a whole different deal. Head gasket maybe. Good luck.

Fan should kick on before it gets that high.. As for coolant loss it could be from expansion from getting hot idling temperature.. I'd verify if fan temp sensor is working or shot

    I agree with this first.

Every trucker should own a radiator pressure checker and carry it in his truck.

My dad bought one for his overheating Perkins in his boat 40 years ago and I still dig it out
once a year for friends with Radiator problems.

Handiest and most used tool I own also the biggest bang for the buck out there as far as diagnostic tools. maybe a 100-150 bucks.

Water boils at 212 degrees and your truck has a consistent running temp of 220-230 do you know how it runs like that without boiling all the coolant out?

PRESSURE --- Without it the water will boil out at 212.In order for your motor to run at 220 without boiling the coolant it needs to hold pressure. It is such a simple problem to solve that if not repaired leads to many large expensive problems in the long run.

The DEATH of every engine out there if it was assembled and is lubricated correctly begins with a OVERHEAT situation and just perpetuates from there.

So if your cooling system cannot hold pressure it it will boil because it needs 220- 230 to run and this Temperature can only be maintained if the cooling system can hold pressure of 12 to 15 lbs.

For an example if you wanted to boil water at a very low temperature you could apply a few lbs of vacuum on it and it would boil at a much lower temperature than 212.

This tool I speak of is nothing more than a radiator cap with a hose with a hand pump attached to it. You replace your cap with the tools cap and pump up the radiator full of pressure and 1 see if it holds and if it doesn't pin point a leak

2 you can start your engine and see if the needle dances and see if you have a blown head gasket

It is a very handy and cheap tool and weighs 3 lbs at best so the heavy haulers can still squeak that big load on.

Tools are needed in a biz like this and I am not even in it yet.

But I have wrenched for 45 years and kept my marine crap making money for me for 20.

Tools are a investment that hurts sometimes but will pay you back 20 fold if you are in this for the long run.

just my 2 cents take it for what you want.

I think it is a coolant circulation problem

If it's cooling off with forward movement and heating up sitting still, it's an issue with the fan. If it was a cooling system deficiency, it would overheat more while moving (more load), and cooling off while sitting (less load).
Being an 06, I'd guess about 450-550k, which is the lifespan of the Horton fan clutches. If you rev it up while it's sitting still and hot, you should hear it quite loudly. The fan moves more air through than moving does up to about 50mph.
