It seemed to work just fine except the fresh air/recirculate button didn't work. Pulled it apart to see what happened and low and behold, there's no hoses hooked up to it. Put it back together and I have no heat (floor vents). If I slide from vent to heat, it opens up the defrost. If I move it to defrost/heat, I can hear air move thru the control valve slightly. If I move to defrost, the control valve leaks (til I find its "sweet spot"), but no gates move.

I'm fed up enough I'm about to hook cables up to each of the gates and control them manually. Problem with that is that I can see where the defrost gate is, but I can't tell where the floor gate is. Any help is appreciated

There are air valves that control the opening and closing of the doors in the dash.
Sounds like you will need to replace them.
I have a 99 and that's what I had to do. They are a pain to change as there is not much room to work with.
    Hope that helps

Ok, so here's my findings (for everyone's future references): remove the defrost luver and the top dash plate. Follow the defrost duct til you see the air actuator (looks like a little shock absorber). The one in plain site controls the "vent" flow. Directly down (toward the floor) is another one. That one directs flow to the floor. It came disconnected. There are #### clips that hold them onti the posts (technically "retaining clips". I call then "#### clips" because when you drop them you yell "####!"). For those following, the #### clips for the top actuator are NOT the same size as the lower one. If I were to guess, I'd say the lower one is about 7/32 (1/4 was too big, 3/16 was too small). I really wish I had pics, but I was racing daylight (I lost by the way. Even though most of what I did was by feel, I still would rather have light lol)

On that note, I still may put cables in instead of the air actuators. At least I know where they all are now. I forgot to mention, if you follow the blue air line, there's another actuator for the right side vents that I didn't actually see too. I can hear one on the far left side as well

Oh, and the recirculate/fresh actuator is in plain sight behind the right lower panel (the one a passenger would be constantly kicking if there were a passenger). And the temp control is a cable. Take the relay panel off and its on the lower right side

The service manual has diagrams of the control and hose routing. You can sign up to use f-liner's partspro online or might be quicker to call a dealer and maybe get them to email you the pictures, info. It's a fool's errand to trace these on your own.

I customized mine so I have 3 positions, defrost, dash or floor and fresh/recirc is independent and a/c compressor has manual toggle switch.

That's the smart way to do it there! I would have forgotten about the AC switch lol. I tried calling freightliner for an issue with my heated mirrors, but they said they don't have anything for a truck so old. What kind of crap is that?!

Makes me wonder if my FLB cabover is the same. I have heat on the floor that also comes out the vents but no defrost. Since i work the truck and its getting colder and its a DOT issue to have no defrost, i need to fix it. Lol

Thanks for this post. You mentioned that you pulled defrost louvers, did that but how did you remove the top dash plate. Our firetruck defrost works great except the one in front of the steering wheel (far left). I pulled the louver and the tubing below has fallen off but I can't figure out how to get the dash pad off so I can hook it back up. Any help would be appreciated.
