Well, it was too good to last (repair free trucking for 3 weeks!!!)....in the next 2 to 4 weeks I'll have to get a new clutch for my Eaton Fuller 10 speed....Freightliner wants $607 for the stock self adjusting clutch.... my uncles mechanic wants $1,300 for the clutch (parts and labor) installing a reman manually adjustable clutch....my buddies (two former Cummins techs 20 + 7 years experience) say they will do it with me (to teach me how to do it ... free education) for a few bucks (mostly beer though)....(a LOT less than $1,300 total)....

    My questions to this forum:

    1. How simple is it to switch from a self adjusting clutch to a manually adjustable one?

    2. Does anyone here have a trusted source for reman parts cheaper than Freightliner?

    3. Is $1,300 too much or a great price for the mechanic? (obviously I would rather do it myself with my buddies, but if the temps in Chicago drop, they might not be to amenable to it as we would be working outdoors)..

    4. How can I find my transmission model (paperwork only says K0479625 but I can't find a match in the Eaton website so I assume it's a serial number or a partial model number...

    Truck is a ,06 Century with a 14L Detroit S60 and 3.55 rears...

No difference in installation, look the same just about.
Any truck parts house has clutches.
I pay about 350 bucks to have a clutch changed out. I have shade tree mechanics who can do it in an afternoon.
Do not need truck transmission info for clutch, unless you have an exotic set up. Goes by diameter and rating.

Be sure and have flywheel turned. Put new clutch brake in.Examine rear main seal.Borow a transmission jack, well worth the effort. Ask about the "E-Z PULL' style clutch. Check all linkage for wear.

Last re-man clutch I bought was around $475.00 for just the clutch kit at a parts house.. Last one I had done in a Navistar shop was 1400, installed. Turn flywheel is around 40.

Clutches are easy to do, you should go for it with your buddies, the more you know about your own truck the better! Swap from self to manual adjust is all in the clutch, nothing on the truck has to change. As advised above check the rear main seal, transmission input shaft, bearing, seal, change the clutch brake, and have the flywheel cut. As for finding the model of your transmission, it should be on the truck data label in the door jamb or glove box/fuse panel cover on the Columbia, if not the dealer can look it up by VIN for you. You should be able to do the job yourself for less than $1,000, including buying a transmission jack from Harbor Freight if you can't borrow one.

Good on you - I think the experience will be well worth it, over and above the labor cost - education is pricelesss. Be interested to hear how you get on.

Hi RERM, well, to be honest , a clutch replacement is not for the faint of heart, but not too tough. Not sure what a self adjusting clutch is, but I did 2 clutches on my Western Star with a BC Cummins. 1st, don't do it outside, if you can. It should be kinda warm and dry and a smooth concrete floor. For sure get a transmission jack, them boxes aren't light. Resurfacing the flywheel is the right way to do it, but will add some time to the job. On my Western Star, both times, the springs on the clutch disc (not pressure plate) broke. After the 2 one went, (in 8 months) I went to the parts guy and asked him if there was a better way, he said I could go with a "severe duty disc" with no springs. That was the ticket, and ran that truck another 3 years, and didn't have a problem. Have fun. One more thing, make sure you "Locktite" all the bolts.

My first clutch, I didn't see the throw out bearing (or know what it was) fall out. I put the whole #### thing back together and I was lucky a mechanic friend stopped by to see how things were going. He asked me about the bearing, my reply with hands in the air, what bearing. Had to redo the whole job.
Changing clutch wasn't that hard. Just under truck not much room to share with the transmission. Had a grass burner and had to remove exhaust to get tranny out.
If you can turn a wrench you can change a clutch. Good luck

    RERM Thanks this.
