hi i am looking at buying my first truck ive found a 2008 freightliner with Detroit 60s engine, 13 speed and 3.70 final drive, and a brand new engine job just completed by Detroit. i was wondering what trouble spots i need to look for when i take it for a test drive. i haul flatbed out of ontario around the east coast to indiana. i was wondering if anybody knows if these freightliner classics are any good or if i should just save up some more for a pete.

The Freightliner is a good and proven truck. Parts are cheap and readily available and every shop works on them. You really can't go wrong.

2008 a dpf only truck ? Keep looking..... Detroits were better than most but they all had problems .

    I wouldn't buy anything that's a 08 or 09. You should look for a 07 or older...

If the price is right for your budget then pull the trigger. Don't get caught up in all this brand loyalty crap. A brand new truck can be a dud just as well as a used truck. It has a fresh motor with warranty so no biggie there. New trucks nowadays are only getting 250k mi warrenty with them now anyway.

670k on the chassis isn't that much either, I would worry about it if it looks like the inside was taken care of. Start it, let it warm up good and take it for a test drive. When you get back look for oil leaks on the transmission, rears and wheel seals. If possible get it on a dyno. Usually an oil sample would be a good idea on a used truck but with the fresh rebuild it won't tell you much.

You didn't mention a price but the rebuild is worth at least $12-15k if not more, apu add another $8-10k. If you pay $30k then you basically got everything else for $5k.

You are buying used, used stuff is gonna break. Part of doing business.

The question you should be asking is why it needed to be rebuilt at such a low mileage... Was truck formerly pulling 138,000 and run hard like most are on the 401 .. I'd ask Detroit for Emmision history on truck if it was a lemon odds are it will still be 100k is 62,000 miles not much of a warranty if shop was confident of rebuild IMO

That is the main thing that would worry me why such low mileage needing the rebuild.

what is so bad on the 2007 and 2008s that can.t be fixed on the emission systems ?

DO NOT BUY 1st year DPF TRUCK! Run away! Look at 2007 or older. 2007 has only EGR - easy to deal with.

The worst years are 2008, 2009 from 2010 and up are much better.
    +1 for cat sdp

If you can look for 2003 and older, but the company you will lease to may have a required age of the truck. Get a Rigdig report on the vehicle. see what the history was.....like a carfax but for trucks. Look for a reason NOT to buy, make a major mistake on the purchase and it can cost thousands over the long haul. Use your head, not your heart, be strong enough to walk away. Used tractors are for sale everywhere.

The emission systems were garbage to begin with. Just seems like financial suicide to get an '08
