I have a 97 Freightliner FLD120 that chooses not to start whenever it wants. I replaced all 4 batteries, brand new. Replaced the starter/solenoid, brand new. I try starting it and it just makes a rapid clicking sound. Any ideas? Thanks.

Frame grounds?

On the firewall there is a relay located near the top on the left side. Try jumping the terminals together with a small screwdriver. Make sure the truck is in neutral and the brakes are locked first. I think you will find out the relay is making the clicking noise, perhaps it needs replacing. If not, check the starter button on the dash, they wear out tooo.
magoo68 Thanks this. -
Thanks driver i will give it a try

The clicking seems to be coming from the starter. I tried jumping the two terminals together and it still clicks from the starter

checked all the grounds there good

Replace the fuses or relays for the ignition or starter maybe, always start with the simple things. Wont hurt to have spare fuses and relays laying around if it doesnt fix it.

When it does this will it start fine if you jump it with another truck? Are your grounds all factory? I have a 2000 fld,on mine the factory ground stud is pressed in. Had to cut off and punch out for a good ground

Clicking relays/starter/solenoid is a indication that there is not enough current (amps) reaching the device..
Bad grounds, bad cables, bad/corroded connections, bad battery, bad starter (too high a draw), ... all need to be verified and load tested.. Short cuts will not work....
