Alright so I'm interested in a 05 Freightliner Century and like it but it has a Mercedes Benz engine om 460 la cid 781 . I don't have much background info on them and if you all can tell me the good and bad of this engine. The truck its in good condition with no rust on body nor frame (Southern truck). Thanks in advance

I had a 2006, good reliable truck. Always started. o.k. On fuel, wimpy exhaust brake, not a power house, but gets the job done. I did 2 years super-b with it (140,000 lbs).
If it has a lot of miles on it the unit pumps (just before the injectors) may need servicing.
If it's working good then seems to start to use more oil than normal, then it is time to get the valves adjusted, then the oil use goes back to normal.

    Exiled Thanks this.

Good engine, but american mechanics are not so well skilled for european engine control, so some silly problems may appeare.

But U can ask me any quation about Mercedes PLD engine control. I like MB, really.

The best advice - avoid full throutle at below 1100 rpm. Rev it up, let engine stay at 1500 crusing rpm for better fuel milage and longer engine life.

The engine is of classical pushrod design with PLD units and "classical" injectors. It has separated cylinder heads for every cylinder. Weak thing is the decompressor valve (it actuates to let truck roll w.o, braking in gear. If engine equipped with this valve - be prepared, it may stuck in open position and u have to remove head to clean carbon deposits.

I stayed away from it considering not many mechanics would work on them . And if they did the labor was more expensive

I just put one of these Mercedes 460 motors in a truck everything seems OK but it will run on its own only if I give it a shot either but it won't stay running any idea
