The truck will shut down if the computer senses a situation that will cause harm to the engine. The shut down over ride button allows you a few minutes to get the truck safely parked if need be. I have never once used the button despite having several trucks equipped with them.

Shutdown Override. If the ECU throws a code and is going to shut down the engine (i.e. blown hose and you lost all of your coolant) that button will buy you an extra 30-60 seconds to get the truck out of the way before the engine shuts itself off.

If it's an old Prime truck, that's the security panic button. If you're in a hijack situation for example, it will get the attention of the security people via QUALCOMM post haste. Don't know if it would still be activated in your case.

Such a button would be nice.

Years ago working for a company another driver was going down University Avenue at Little Rock loaded during the busy morning traffic and his truck shut down on him and he could not get out of the way. If its temp got over 200 degrees it shut down no matter where you were, instantly. This company was running about 60 conventional KW's and that is the only truck I ever heard of doing that during my 5 to 6 years driving for them.

Had a Cascadia go into shutdown mode because of a wiring issue it wouldn't do a burn - 25 snowing and 120 miles from next town (up north) I jimmied a paper clip to hold button and made the trip in derate mode .. Tows up in northern ontario can run you 3000 easy ..

It is also used to get flash codes. On a Detroit, if you push that button, the amber light will flash stored codes, the red shutdown light will flash active codes.
