Hi all. We have a 1996 Freightliner with a Cat 3406E engine. Intermittently, the Shutdown Engine light on the dash will start to flash. Sometimes it will flash a few times and quit, sometimes it will continue flashing and then shut down the engine. If the truck is in motion, shutting off the key for a second or two and turning it back on will stop the flashing - sometimes for an indefinite period, sometimes for only a half a minute.
We hooked up one of those diagnostic tools and it can't find anything wrong. We had the same problem last fall and the tool told us to change the rad fluid level sensor. We changed it and the truck ran well until today. We topped up the anti-freeze and tried messing with a bunch of wires, cleaning connections and such to no avail ...
Does anyone here have a similar experience and a suggestion for a fix? Or even a suggestion for a fix without having had the same experience?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Chodove

Had a Western Star 3406E do that, it never logged any codes. It would cut on and off while driving or totally shut down. Might start right back up or after filters, priming, either, ETC. Could run an hour, day, or a week. Drove it full time with a reader and found when it cut out low oil PSI showed on scanner but manual gauge PSI was good. Oil sender fixed it but it never logged a code.

I had a similar problem with the cat in a White/Volvo/GMC? I had the EMC programed to not shut the engine off. Mine would flash the red light and shut off after 15 seconds. Moving or not. Nothing was ever wrong except for the warning light and the engine shut off. I changed several sensors without resolving the issue. Good luck.

Thanks for the info folks ... Will be taking a look at some grounds tomorrow and will definitely talk to the "real" mechanic to pass along suggestions. We are rather old school and this electronic gadgetry is a bit overwhelming to troubleshoot at times. The oil sending unit makes sense because I've noticed the gauge drop pressure for no reason, at any rpm high or low. Makes a lot of sense to me.
I will let you know how we make out. This seems like a cool site. Thanks again for the pointers. -
Had the same kind of problem with a Volvo with a detroit, ended up being a sensor on the firewall telling the computer the truck was upside down and cutting the fuel off to the truck, but didn't give any codes but would do the same thing.

Definitely sounds like a power/ground issue, making the system reboot.
