Time to make sure you are maxing out on the 401k and making use of the flex plan for medical stuff. I foolishly didn't take advantage of the flex at first while with my prior employer. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB. Paying bills with pretax dollars is a beautiful thing.

I have no experience OTR , but it seems you can do better working tankers rather than doing box. It seems like yu dont get srewed as bad as the guys with a box that sits all day with no detention pay.So if i were doing OTR .. it would be tankers hands down....

I pulled a box before this and I did get paid detention. I just don't have very much waiting with the tank. That is the differance that I see. Now when I show up at a delivery they actually seem to want me there.

I love the tankyanking primarily because of our customers...

99% of the people are great to work with and they act like they are eager for you to be there.

box almost always seemed like, oh the truck is here, take a number we'll get you when we can...

now this isn't always true of course, especially in my experience the smaller the company, the more happy they were to see you... but the biggest companies were just running to many trucks thru the business to really see you as anything but more work.

I did flat bedding part time when I was hauling petroleum... flat seemed good customerwise also... but then I wasn't hauling lumber into home depot, I image that could suck... but the small fry guy, he was always ready and waiting for you to show up.

I think part of the reason tank seems so great is that the driver unloads, so the customer really just has to point at the pipe and sign papers and you're off at your own pace... not having to wait on "moe" to comeback from break and run a forklift...

whatever "it" is... I'm not flitting off to drag a box anytime soon.

I'll just keep hugging my tank...

a buddy of mine hired on at the begining of the month.

gave his two weeks notice at the old company and was in blue grass on the 16th for orientation and training.

I called him at home on the 19th and then ran into him on the 20th with his trainer.

says he's happy and liking training. The trainer is going slow and giving him time to absorb the info and that overall it doesn't seem to be to bad at all.

"not to bad" is a rave review from this guy... lol

and he is being shown how to use the computer... how to elog for whenever that goes live.

I'm real glad he decided to make the switch to gless, we really needed the help to keep up with business but most importantly...

he is just a great worker that really got caught in a bad deal.

his next to last company "was" a good place to be but it went boots up last year. Since then, he's been working locally hauling propane. not hating life but not loving it either. (the pay kinda sucks) flat broke if you weren't working and still regular broke even when you were...

This will definately change for him here at gless...

he was really worried about leaving his low pay job and moving to gless because he had a sense of security. the pay sucked but business was steady and he didn't think he would get laid-off or anything which is huge in todays economy... blah blah...

I told him what tim told him, if we don't really need the help and know that we can keep you busy, we won't hire you.

granted nobody has a crystal ball but our company is financially strong, we are gaining new business, and haven't seen the massive cutbacks felt in the box transportation industry.

Tim, specifically said, we have a responsibility to keep the guys working here, right now, busy. We aren't going to cut our current drivers pay by hiring on too many new guys. We only hire when our business out grows the current work forces ability to cover the loads.

English translation:

we want to have enough work available to keep you busy and with a real good payday. good paydays is what keeps you guys happy and working here... so we aren't going to over staff and cut your miles back, cutting your pay.

yeah... tim knows the deal... hehe

anyways, glad we got a new guy... cuz we needed the help!!!

if you are interested in working for gless, find a gless driver and talk to them about how things are going in your local area. we may or may not be hiring in your area.

but also... (TIP)

they got a jillion apps sitting in a pile to weed thru... when a current driver brings in your application with his recomendation for your hiring, your app gets first attention.

We take our drivers recommendations seriously and the thinking here is that, you know the guy and want to work with him and you know his history or you wouldn't be reccomending him to us because if he turns out to be a yo-yo, well you're going to have egg on your face for bringing him to us in the first place.

I know there are a dozen guys have asked me to recommend them and after talking to them and hearing they have worked for 42 different companies, I take their app and hand it in with a disclaimer, "this ain't my guy and I don't know him, he just wants a job and I'm the mailman"

my guy I got hired, 59, 20 years at sarah lee, 6 at wsc until they closed, less than a year at current place until he was accepted here at gless.

thats stable experience versus 42 companies in ten years which is no experience and history of can't hold a job.

Is there anyway to make more than .40cpm here? I guess the pay is better than some.

Depending on your gag reflex you make be able to get more. Otherwise .40 is our payrate.

How do they calculate the miles? I was told they use an electronic logbook. Does this mean it is hub miles? I guess I don't get the gag reflex joke.

We run the movers guide miles although for some reason they are much closer than I remember(My last carrier paid practical miles). The logs are the people net e-logs. Using them brings any log book funny business to a sudden halt.

I see you are from TX so I assume you are looking more to Foodliner as opposed to Questliner/Gless Bros.

I am supposed to haul sugar from New Orleans to Garland,TX. I didn't ask too many questions. Wondering if they stay loaded both ways typically? Supposedly pays $375 round trip. Doing the math thats .36cpm at 523 miles. I guess the other .04cpm is what you lose with HHG miles. How fast do you think my truck is going to be? It will be great if it is anything over 62mph.
