Swift will give you a DOT physical the first day of school. The only reason you would need one before school would be if your state required a physical to get your permit. You stated you already have your permit so you would not need a DOT physical before arrival.

I just finished the millington academy the beginning of August. What a joke! Thank god I had some prior experience driving. If you are brand new to trucking, Millington is not the place to be. There were 28 of us students assigned to 2 instructors. 1 on 1 time was hard to come by. If you were having trouble with a skill, they would let you struggle until the day before the skills test, then spend 15 minutes "helping" you, then take off again. As far as DOT physicals go, Swift will give you a DOT physical when you get there, if you dont have one that is good for more than 1 year. It will cost you 40 bucks and they are TOUGH. We had one guy get sent home because he had knee surgery 24 years ago and didnt bring paperwork to show it. If you have any medical problems, make sure you bring EVERYTHING with you that you can to prove its being treated. Make sure you bring plenty of drive and heart, because you will need it. Some people compare it to boot camp, and they are pretty close to being right. If I had it to do over again, I definatly would NOT go back to millington. feel free to ask anything you want, and I will do my best to help!!

    Finally,

Someone tells the truth about Millington TN. Even the local PD told me they get called down there a lot. Fortunately I had a CDL and only had to go through part of it.

I agree with most of what you said and feel that these are positives about the Millington Academy. They are not in business to hold your hand or coddle you. They exist to train you to get your CDL and they only have 3 weeks to get the job done. For some people the time frame may make learning the required skills difficult, but the instructors will work with those who need help. As for physicals, Swift will give you a DOT Physical whether or not you have a valid card and IT COST YOU NOTHING... and did you actually say the physical is TOUGH??? I guess that if you thought a physical was tough I would understand why you had trouble at the Academy!!!

That's an interesting version of events...

I finished Millington in May of this year, and my experience was a pleasant one. Never been inside a truck until Millington. Instructors were great! If you expect hand holding, then this isn't the profession for you. Boot camp? Maybe. It's all about attitude! :biggrin_25519:

Truck driving training should not be made like boot camp. I know a lot of drivers out there who will agree. You are there to learn the basics, not be in a dictatorship. Swift will give a trainee two shots to make it compared to other schools who will actually work with you ( i know a guy who took seven and made it at my school). On the second try, they make you sign a paper saying you are going on academic probation. After that see ya with a big fat I owe you attached.

Now those that can make through Millington have my respect as they go through a whole lot.
