Anything mechanical rises no higher than #2 on the list of important factors when considering fuel mileage.

If you are looking at the a group of engines and want to know which one has the best fuel mileage there are EPA stickers on all engines. It has a section that has the number of MM3 of fuel it takes to make the rated HP. The lower the number the better. Driver, rolling resistance, aerodynamics, road conditions, weather, all have an effect.

Read somewhere that driver habits are the biggest impact on economy by as much as 30% same truck, same conditions 1 driver with good habits another with poor. Maintain it, and drive it right.
