I'm assuming that you turned up the mic gain knob on the front?

Take it to a cb shop....
there is more to it than just turning the modulation up...

I never trust a meter on a cb

if the radio was brand new in the box, it will need to be tuned to have maximum performance. if you want to "broadband" the radio, ask your shop of choice about the Lescomm viagra boards. more information is here http://lesterscustoms.com/galaxy_959_kit_inst

in a nutshell, that is an aftermarket PC board that was made for the 959 (and others) series radios so they can still get FCC certification, and you can have a few bands of extra channels like the older galaxy radios. i had a 959 that had one of these boards in the radio, and it had 40 channels above and 40 below the reg 40, and that included sideband as well. it is a very good addition to that radio, but it has to be professionally installed. any reputable cb shop can install one of these kits in about a half hour.

the 959 can also have the chip jumped for extra channels as well, but the stability of the radio will be compromised. also, when the chip is jumped, the channels do not stay in order. the kit can be installed and you can have a switch installed or use one of the switches on the front which is what most people do.

The Lescom board is a great product but any CB with one installed will lose it's FCC certification for use on the CB band.Chances are you would never run into trouble using it as long as you use common sense.

on am the meter shows 60-80%. on ssb the meter barley moves. I think the meter is only for Am. i like the idea of extra channels and am saving up money to have a viagra board installed. this radio is driving a RM Itily amp (about 80$ on amazon.com) i dont want to lose my ham license because of breakiing the cb rules but like mad dog 20/20 said just use common sense

i have the galaxy 99 and it has 8 bands. i can go way up in the 10 meter range, but i NEVER key the radio. i love listening to the HAM operators talk in the 28.3xx freq range. i also get a kick out of how fast some of those guys send morse code. its amazing. the lowest channel i have talked on is 26.765 and i dont talk much higher than 27.705 but i do listen. and i hear the ####### talking everywhere. they dont care.

i may be wrong on this, but to own a licensed HAM transciever, i dont think you have to have a HAM license. its not illegal to listen, only to xmit. but seeing how the majority of us run the non certified transmitters like the Galaxy, Connex, Magnum, Stryker, Northstar models, they are illegal to have period.

i do own a Uniden President 2600 and i am looking at possibly buying a Uniden HR2510 but i have not decided yet. im waiting on one radio to sell on fleabay before i can allocate funds elsewhere.

the new version of the viagra board gives 40 below and 40 above the reg 40 for 120 AM channels. if you count the sideband, the 959 comes with 120 factory, then adding the board adds 240 more channels for 360 total. and the freq counter on the radio will tell you where you are.

You are correct; it is not illegal to own an Amateur radio transceiver if you don't have a license. The license allows you to transmit. There is no need for any license to receive radio signals in the USA.

The 10 meter radios you mentioned are NOT illegal to own. The ban is on the manufacture and US sales of those radios, hence marketed as "export only" radios. Hams, of course, can use them on the Amateur bands.

I find it interesting that there is a ban on the importation and sales of these radios in the US, but there is no shortage of them. I wonder why customs doesnt confiscate them...
