Dash cams are bad news for whoever causes the accident, so if you're in the wrong you'd better hide that camera quick!

Not really any downside to having one. Sure if by some chance you were in an accident that was your fault and it was turned on you could have the footage subpoenaed. Of course if you were inclined to you could also erase such footage and claim it wasn't turned on. Technology isn't a bad thing, use it to your advantage. Or don't, it's your choice.

So long as you're sure he's a professional driver, 100% of the time it may be advisable. But I doubt if 2 in 10 cases where an event occurred where the trucker was cleared, the dash cam would actually capture anything relevant. They're good at capturing rear-end accidents (following too close). And in a bad accident where the driver was injured and the vehicle towed, the dash cam will be gathered as evidence by the police. And where he may have been given the benefit of the doubt, it may prove aggressive or unsafe driving on the trucker's part, or simply bad driving habits.

It's a double edged sword. And, you need to monitor towards both sides to the rear to capture most incidents where the trucker was genuinely not at fault.

Tony, sorry but I just couldn't let one this easy get away so take it in fun from another old fart.

We also don't need these cell phone things either. For decades we got along fine with the phone on the wall in the kitchen. We could even make it mobile with a long cord so it would reach the living room couch.

Hey TomOfTx I would like to check out your dash videos, but they are private ...... "???"
Why would you post links to your videos telling fellow truckers to take a look if they are private??

There are no cons to having dash cams. I have one in each car and 3 in the truck. One on each outside mirror and one on the windshield. I have them set to panoramic view so i have full 3 lane coverage when needed from the windshield. The two on the mirrors cover the complete sides of my truck. Protects from fuel theft in the truck stops, or hits from inexperienced drivers.
Worth the money and hook-up time.

Depends. If he's not interested in collecting evidence of his innocence he might know he's not that innocent... or maybe he's technophobic.

Good luck trying to have more than a 3 second following distance at 4:35pm in Dallas, TX. That is why I was about 20 mph below the posted speed limit. :)
