No Haz-Mat if it has no Placards. As for tanker better call DMV for every state you go through.

A Tanker Endorsement is just another written test (it was 50 Q here in Michigan) and just another $5. Why not just get one?

You can pull any tanker: new OR used without a HAZMAT if it has NEVER hauled HAZMAT or it has been purged. However, you still need the tanker endorsement.

That's not entirely true about no placards. If it's had hazmat in the tank before you're required to have the tank blown down or de-gased and issued a certificate that the tank is gas free. If it's a new tank then you can show the paper work that you just picked up the truck and it's never had any product loaded in the tank. As far as the endorsements goes the officer can say it's a tank and you need the endorsement. Some might let you go without it but why not just get the endorsement since it's so easy?

If it hauled volatile fluids, you HAVE to have it PURGED and a certificate that it has been done, as Gashauler and I both have said.

Or you can fill the tank with a material that doesn't require placards. I know of one major oil company that would fill their gasoline tankers with water instead of paying someone to de-gas the tank.

Well I think thats what my post said.Cleaned out or purged same thing. And when this is done the company that done the work will give you the certificate when you pick it up.Law is the Placards stay on till its cleaned or purged. Its still a Haz-Mat load till this is done. You will get a ticket for this same as running with Placards after it was cleaned.
