I'v always routed myself and wouldn't want it any other way. I won't work for someone who tells me the exact route I need to drive regaurdless of problems or not.

I spoke with there recruiter there and was IMEDIATLY put off. She was cocky and condescending. Plus they started out offering me $.50 cpm then as we talked it kept going down. Aparently they don't accept local work as experience even though I drive as many miles as a regional driver, only difference is I don't sleep in the truck. I did local for 4 years after my son was born, then I have 8 years otr.

oh ya, they wanted me to PROOVE my experience with documentation. Aparently checking with past employers isn't enough. they wanted log books from over 12 years ago to show my OTR experience. WHO keeps that stuff that long??? nobody, and they know it. That's how they get around hiring at there $.50cpm rate

I'm reading a heartland brochure, and according to it they DO NOT take grads. 1 year OTR minimum. Just FYI.

I live in there new western regional area where they say they hire from and was told that I need to relocate to Phoenix AZ because thats where the terminal is and I would have to leave the truck there when/if I take the weekends off. I refereed them to another one of there drivers I have been friends with for several years who takes her home time where ever she wants in the region and was told:
'she must have a special arrangement'.
'Would you be willing to make an arrangement like that with me so I don't need to move, maybe I could stay out longer?'
'No'.
'Goodbye'

I drove for heartland twice. Once as a solo and the other time with my wife and i would like to respond to this post.

Quote:
3. If you respond to a dispatch by saying you cannot make the delivery on time, and do this a number of times, they will start to threaten your employment, and will eventually terminate you for “freight refusal.” Naturally, if you agree to the load and deliver it late, they will fire you for that too. A high percentage of the loads they dispatch were loads another carrier failed to cover, for whatever reason, thus this is how they can charge a higher rate, but the delivery time remains the same. So you will be dispatched on a load, for example, at 3:00 PM that should have been picked up at 10:00 AM, and they just expect you to drive it straight through. This is the normal dispatch. Driving straight through every day, is no life, no fun, not humane, but this is how they expect you to earn the $200 per week extra that the other companies are not paying.
They did not at any time tell me or my wife and i that we HAD to take a load if we were out of hours. At any time if i told them that i was low on hours they would tell me to take a brake or dispatch me or us on a short load.

Quote:
4. You should know that Heartland claims it has a 60% turnover rate.
5. Heartland has a bad reputation, so they have to pay drivers $500 for every recruit they bring in, and have “driver recruitment goals“ begging drivers to bring in “at least one.” There are some greedy drivers that do this, even though they are not happy with the company themselves.
This is news to me! Anytime while behind the wheel of a heartland truck i can not ever remember anyone saying we drove for a bad company. I also have not heard anyone say this at any other time.

Quote:
6. Fleet managers are low trained and inexperienced in the trucking industry. They do not know what the drivers are going through and they will NOT speak to you or recognize you as a person.
>Funny thing is that at the terminal in Coralville Iowa and Kingsport TN i don't remember seeing any poor looking cars at ether lot. Of the 4 fleet mangers i knew they all had set time in a truck. One had over 1 million safe miles under his belt. Also. Any time i walked into the building and i met the people that knew my name they would speak to me, at both locations.

Quote:
7. Try to find a ‘happy Heartland driver.’ Try to find one driver who has been with them a month or more who is happy with anything at Heartland. I doubt you will find one, or he is a liar.
Both i and my wife were and are very happy with the way we were treated at Heartland. As far as the liar comment goes i will just let that slide. No point in getting band from this forum for a foolish comment like that.

Quote:
8. They want you to fuel at their own facilities 80% of the time, but they only have about five terminals you will use in the country. Naturally, the loads they get for you do not take this into account, so you will have to stop and call the fuel department and explain why, and get a PO# for every outside fuel stop. If you pass a terminal, you are required to stop and fuel, but the FM’s trying to meet a $$ goal will send you a message demanding you pass it by to save time.

Whats wrong with that? If you were the owner of a large company you would want to save as much money as you could by fueling at the terminal. Its a lot cheaper that way and we were never told to pass by with out fueling at any time and they WOULD raise #### if you did not!

Quote:
9. They have no concept of 14 hour day. They will run you 12 hours to delivery, then give you a known “long delay live load, or a long delay live unload from a yard and expect you to drive illegal after load or unload to get off the property and sleep on the street or exit ramp, or wherever you can, and that’s just one more day without a shower, and a good meal.
More BS! When i was a solo they never pushed me this hard and i don't ever remember any other driver saying they did them ether. When we ran team for them they did not push us beyond our limits and if we told them we wanted to take a little brake even if we were under a load they would call ahead and reschedule the pick up time or delivery date and time.<

Quote:
10. You will go without a shower for two to three days at a time, all the time, because they don‘t route you with any slack. Bring some hand towels and those “handy wipes” things because poor hygiene is also affecting your health.
Once more this is total BS!

The only reason we stopped driving for them was so that i could be home when my wife had our son, They let us run with the doctors permission up until 3 weeks before the due date. The reason i left the first time was to be with my wife for the 2 months that she was in training with the understanding that once she had on year of set time we could come back and we did. The reason i did not go back is because i did not want to be away from home but they still call at least once a year to offer me a job and i have a open invitation to come back at anytime i'm ready.

My advise to any of you is to talk to a Heartland driver that you run into and ask them and see for your self if they liked or disliked driving for them because when it comes to this drivers comments one of 2 things happened.

#1. He had a very poor fleet manger and which point he should have talked to management and told them the problems he was having. I promise you they would have sent that guy packing quick fast and in a hurry!

#2. This guy did not want to run. He wanted to sit around the truck stop and BS with the other lazy drivers. He wanted to take his time while driving so he could stop for anything at anytime he felt the need to.

A company is what you make of it. If you act as a professional driver then you will be treated as such but if you act like a " trashy trucker " then don't be surprised if they don't want to remember your name!

Stayed at a nice hotel

I was hired by Heartland one time. I went through their orientation which lasted three days and they put me and some other drivers up at a nice hotel. Took us out to lunch everyday, made it look great. After orientation I had to ride with another driver down to Jacksonville, Fl to their terminal there to pick my truck up and get dispatched. I got there and was put up in another hotel. Now this one I was afraid to shower in, it was so nasty. The next morning someone was suppose to come and get me around 8:00 a.m. Well, I never go picked up till 10:00 a.m. I was taken to the yard, assigned a truck that had grease all over the side, and I was told by another driver that you had to buy 409 or some other degreaser to get the grease off since their truck wash was only a high pressure washer. Then after getting everything in my truck and running it through the truck wash, I went to dispatch. Dispatch told me they had a load for me (a Sears load), but I wouldn't be dispatched out till midnight. They actually thought I was going to sit around in a hole-in-the-wall area with a picnic table for 12 hours waiting on a load. I went in to dispatch and told them I had changed my mind about the job, had one of their drivers take me to the airport, I rented a car and went home. Oh they keep sending me post cards about how much they are paying. I didn't care for their Internationals, slow ones at that, anyhow.

If they had a load for you, why did they not just let you leave with it?

Forbidden 3 Heartland express

I have been on the road twenty years all I can say about Heartland is run and run fast if they offer you a job it's the worst company in the business I was told home at least once a week it's a joke they think home means a couple of hours passing by with a quick stop and they made mistakes on your pay often if you don't catch it you lose if you do catch they say they made a mistake and offer a comcheck I worked over two months making 3 or 4 hundred dollars a week just sitting around waiting to load or unload when I tried to quit I was offered this program where you are guarenteed 825 a week worked fine for a few weeks then I got home two days the next week check was 312 dollars supposedly I was off program to many days tried to turn in truck in Atlanta again was sent three preplans to do after I told them I quit was told do all three or we will report you as quit under dispatch how can you quit they keep sending preplans
My advice is stay away from Heartland

Forbidden 3 Heartland express please read

I am the wife of a Heartland driver I have had to sell most of my clothes and shoes on e-bay as most weeks my husband works seven days and gets around 312.17 direct deposit.
They start taking insurance 61 dollars a week one month before it goes into effect, when asked about it it's to cover you if you are out sick.Don't ask for that 240 dollars back when you leave it's in neverwas land.
I just am thankful I had good taste and bought nice clothes when my husband worked for honest company to which he is going back
