For the guys that are hauling heavy (+100,000) what are you using for a trans cooler, air or coolant?
Transmission coolers

Coolant on a 18sp.got water in trans caught it early on a rear seal seap.Replaced cooler then when warm weather hit I noticed trans running 30 to50 deg hotter replaced trans filter and its back to nornal. The air oil coolers are slow pulling temp back down, but no chance getting water in oil, I still donot have all the oil out of the radiator. The parts guys said they sell a few coolant coolers all the time.

coolant only way to go

I've only seen air coolers here friend of mine put a 12v fan behind his with a switch on the dash. They seem to keep temperature down even when it's hot.

My air one went from 200 to 175 today, by turning the engine fan on. So they can lower temps quick enough with some thought.
Never been a fan of the coolant type, for the reasons I said before.
Hmmm, coolant and transmission bearings.....yummy.

Mine is air.....because Martin is mostly always right and he recommended it. Temps come down fine but I almost always engage the fan manually when pulling a grade.

leftlanetruckin Thanks this. -
I have a coolant style, had a leak awhile back mixed oil and coolant made a mess of things. I do believe I bought the one I have now from Detroit radiator works its stainless steel core and they say its dam near bullet broof! so far it works no leaks and it keeps the trans temp way down

Like the other bloke said, AIR, hands down.
Me and another driver spent summer pulling 240k up Cabbage Hill, all boxes always in the red.
He ended up putting external cooler w/fan, worked excellent!!! I think he also plumbed it with shut off valves to run coolant thru for the winter. Lost track of him, not sure how that worked out. Good Luck. SteveB. -
Ours is coolant in front of the radiator and coils for AC. Hooked in with radiator coolant, has Parker hoses look like they are off Cat Dozer. Runs whatever coolant temp is.

I always remove the coolant coolers and replace with air coolers in front of radiator on all my trucks. works great. I don't use eatons air coolers I buy mine off a local hydraulic hose company that is twice as big and heavier duty in design.
