Ok so I was unsure about starting a thread on this but here goes:

I know who wants to go to CA, right? It turns out that I want to go and the rates will support it, that is not what the discussion is about.

The problem I am trying to solve is how to use my existing trailer set without buying a west coast equalizer 9 axle and still haul loads up to 85/90k net.

As 8 axle I can scale 90k net in almost all states by configuring my trailer as a 3 plus or closed 4 and utilizing my 4 axle tractor. However, when I try to run west I run into issues with weight restrictions and equipment restrictions in both CA and AZ.

The weight issue I am trying to get past in AZ is that AZ will only give me 54k on my drives with the lift axle down and the same on my trailer as a closed 3 axle. So at 54000 empty weight with a max gross of 54+54+18 = 122k-54k = 68k in AZ

I could use my spreader as a 2+1 for a net gain of 46k+20k-54k-1k(weight of spreader bar) =10k

However, CA won't let me run the spreader at all and my 3rd axle flip only in certain situations at best.

CA and AZ will let me run a jeep and are liberal on length - not NM so much (85' needs an escort).

On my trailer I have a 10' neck with a 3' flip for a total of 13'. So, on my tractor when I put down the lift axle and do not have the fifth wheel slid all the way forward - weight comes off of my steer axle and things get scary for steering. I have loaded heavy and reduced the weight from 14.5k empty to 9k because I had my flip neck up (10' neck) and couldn't slide far enough forward.

So for this to work I can really only run with the lift axle up I think and 10' of neck on the jeep will work.

If I can get 18' from last drive axle on tractor to first drive axle on jeep then CA would give me a max of 46k on both axle groups. If I can only get 14 then I could get 39k on both. This would get me in both AZ and CA a net weight of (18+39+39+54-54-9(weight of jeep) = 87k

Most of the 2 axle jeeps I have seen have a short neck and long slider set up for a 17' neck. So I am not sure with my 13' neck if I can slide far enough forward to split the weight in a roughly 50/50 ratio between the jeep and drive axle groups.

Short of finding one to test with I hoping someone has tried this with a regular 55t trailer like mine vs. a 60t plus long neck trailer.

there you go Jason, I have posted it

Thanks, that's all above my experience level, but I do look forward to the replies from those that have the experience.

With a long jeep like your wanting you'll never get it to split 50/50 and you'll always be heavy on your jeep. I've run a tandem jeep with my 55t 13 ft neck trailer and I can't get it to split better than 70/30 with the jeep being heavy. I'm looking at buying a short tandem jeep and running as a closed four on my drives, unfortunately I don't think CA or AZ recognizes a closed 4. The biggest problem with a 17 ft neck is that you can't seem to get far enough away from the back triple to keep it legal back there when your loading a full deck. I understand what your trying to do but is don't think it's possible without a trailer swap or at the very least a 60t neck on your trailer.

    281ric Thanks this.

That's what I am afraid of Ty. Know anyone that has one to test with?

I have an old one but it'll take a bit to get road worthy. I might kno of a couple around to test with but I'm not sure if they'll rent them.

I am going to try my trailer guy this week and see. They have one hooked to an old west coast 9 in their yard.

It will only work for me if a can get no more than 55/45 split and then it would have to be an 18 spread, otherwise it won't work.

so this is what I am thinking and the reach to the 5th wheel looks doable even slid forward

If he had a long neck, wouldn't he be able to slide up and get weight off the jeep tandems and onto the drives and steer though Ty?
BTW Ty, you know Robert Phlaff?

That jeep doesn't look like it will give you 18' from last drive axle to front jeep axle. I have a 13 axle trailer sitting beside me now, and there isn't anywhere close to that on this trailer, kingpin is 6" roughly ahead of the center of the three axles on the truck. I can hop out and take measurements/pics if you want.

No don't go to that trouble

If I can find one to test with, I am going to try and run it between the 2nd and 3rd axles and measure.

    No I don't know him.

That's what I'm saying with his short neck now he'll never get the weight off the jeep and onto the drives.
