abs older tractor,new trailer need info on key on not break actuated

    hello, i have a question... first i shall explain the scenerio... i have a 2000 western star and a 2012 Utility trailer. The ABS system is brake actuated and with this combination, the ABS is working as it should, which means when I turn the key to run position i do not have the idiot light to show that the system is working ok. I press the brake and i see the ABS light turning on for 1-2 seconds and turning off as it should. we are told we need to have a key on system of continual power, we are also told it is as easy as splicing a power wire to the system, we do not have constant power. My questions are: 1. Does anyone know if this is a DOT rule? (i checked and key-on for this combination isn't in the rule.) 2. Does anyone have that easy fix or the instructions or know of a mechanic or company that has installed or wired a key-on constant power.

    As long as you have the ABS light come on the trailer, then go off, you are fine. When you turn the ignition on, you should see an TRAILER ABS tell tale light and it should go off. If this comes on, you are fine. There is no need to butcher anything, this is how it is designed.

    ok thanks peeps, but your not answering my real question... i have a 2000 western star and a 2012 utility trailer, the abs works with this combination... which is when i step on the brakes, the abs works fine.. however law says must cycle when the key (power) (run) is turned on.. am asking is anyone has any knowledge of a mechanic that can convert the brake actuated abs light to come on--- to when i turn the key on... this is the question. :biggrin_25521:

    Your truck should have key on power at your trailer plug. If it does not something is wrong. Figure out why and fix it. The power when brake is applied is a secondary backup just in case the key power is not working.

    Just because your westernstar is a 2000 that's not old. That's not the reason you have no key on power. Check the breaker for the trailer hot line in your fuse box. Whatever it takes , but you should have power at the trailer plug when ign is in the on position.
    The abs ECM is being cycled right now everytime you step on the brake.

    in your 7 way trailer socket your middle (blue)wire should be key on power to power the abs system.good luck.

    Check fuses for Trailer Aux or trailer ABS. Also Some tractors have 2, 7-way connectors on the back of the cab one with a 12v Aux that is constant hot and one where there is a 12v switched aux

    really trailer ABS is powered with AUX cabel, but as redundance stop light power is used too.

    If ABS unit loose power it actuates with stop light power, but it needs about a second to start up, so sometimes if u hit brake wheels start skidding and a second later ABS actuates.

    If ABS unit is powered correctly it actuates instantly.

    In Europe one more cabel is used for trailer ABS ore EBS. They use 5 wire ore 7 wire cord (battary power, ignition power, two ground wires, ABS fault lamp and ABS to tracktor CAN wires). It is more expencive solution but more reliable.

    On a bendix abs system which should be whats on a 2012 utility unless specd otherwise it should have constant ignition power going to it. If we do not have that power then we will not power up. Also we do not run off brake lamp power at all. So if the system is powering up on a brake applicaiton we may have shorted wires on the trailer harness. If you have another tractor or a friend with one just have him plug the trailer into his truck and repeat the failure. If it doesnt happen then its an issue with your truck. If it still happens trailer problem.
