Hey all,
So I am almost done my CDL course and I am starting to think seriously about what direction I want to go in with trucking. My course completion is equivalent to two years experience.
I am really liking the looks of heavy haul. I would assume flatbed is a good starting point but I would like some advice specifically on how to go heavy. I figure it will take some time to get to the gigantic loads that caught my attention but I would like to hit the ground running in the right direction. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
How does one get into heavy haul?

Your course training is equivalent to 2 years experience? Try telling that to an employer, lol.
Nothing is equivalent to experience except.. actual experience.
The way to get into heavy haul is applying to heavy haul jobs like any other trucking job. -
ramblingman, skootertrashr6, peterbilt_2005 and 3 others Thank this.

In order to become a heavy hauler you have to be bitten by another heavy hauler. On the next full moon you'll complete your transformation into a specialty driver. I wish there was a more simple way than that, but i'm afraid its the only way you can get hired.
MartinFromBC, Lepton1, Aussie Tom and 4 others Thank this. -
You want to haul heavy,,,well, start lifting heavy. 2/3 sets of the 5 basic movements at 6 or less reps a set. That will make you stronger...oh wait, my bad your talking about trucking...lol
The only way I know is to get into flat bed first, find a company that does flatbed but does heavy haul as well. Otherwise just find a flatbed company, stay with them for a while than, start looking for a heavy haul outfit that tickles your fancy. Good luck..Chinatown, MJ1657 and skootertrashr6 Thank this. -
considering your location, look at Challenger flatbed division.

Thanks all. I am going to the Challenger open house Saturday, will look into flatbed there and see what other local options I have.

In USA I know of 3 heavy haul companies that hire new CDL grads, but that doesn't help you.
Maybe someone on the Canadian forum can help. -
you'll need more than your 2 years course completion for sure. I hate to break it to you but you have no more experience than any other n00b starting out and I sure wouldn't come off that way in an interview. Just sayin'...

yep. et a few years of falt bedding in. get some exp with OD loads. work your arse off. then apply to HH companies. they are NOT easy to get into.
