    Hi,

I'm working on a school project where we research a company/industry and I was given Hub Group. I've been reading articles on the company, but I'm still a little fuzzy on what they do.
It's my understanding that let's say a company has goods coming in from China that needs to get to Chicago, Hub will take care of planning all the logistics. So they will hire truckers to pick up the goods at the port, which are then delivered to rails, the rails bring it to Chicago (or close), then a trucker picks up the goods and delivers it to the final destination. Is that about right?
So either Hub uses their own drivers or contracts them out to a third party?
How do they pay you? Is it by a combination of weight & distance?
Do you negotiate with them on the rate or is there a set rate?
Over the last few years, have these rates you get paid been going up or down? I'm trying to figure out what impacts these rates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm definitely confused over here!

From my understanding, a container truck pick up the goods from the customer. He drives to the ports which get put on the freight ship. Ship dock at cali or where ever, another driver pick up the container, drives to the rail yard and drop it there which gets ship via rail to Chicago. Then a Volvo truck comes pick it up from the rail yard and delivery it.

Hub use their drivers but sometimes have a 3rd party (I had haul hub stuff in a Schneider can before) I believe hub is o/o? I'm not sure I don't pay much attention to them.

OP, sorta. Not all containers come off a container ship. It sometimes goes like this:
An ocean container comes off the ship. A truck picks up the ocean cont at the port and take it to warehouse who will unload the ocean cont and reload it onto a larger domestic container (53 foot). From there another truck will take the domestic cont to the rail ramp to be shipped across country.

Upon arriving at the destination ramp, the domestic cont will be off loaded from the train and picked up by a truck who will deliver the domestic cont to its final destination.

But if HUB is anything like my company, JB Hunt, not all of their freight comes out of the ports. A lot of it is just customer to customer. A driver picks up a domestic cont in Green Bay, WI, he takes it to Norfolk Southern in Chicago. The train goes to Harrisburg, PA. A driver picks up the domestic cont and delivers it to Woodland, PA.

Regarding whether the drivers are HUB or third parties and about their pay, you're probably better off asking HUB themselves
