I own a 2011 International Lonestar with a cummins ISX - bought truck with December 2009 spec motor. I love the truck very quiet and smooth riding. It is equpped with the computer DID display and I am supposed to be able to get fault or diagnostic codes to show up. Warning engine light comes on with orange triangle on the dash but I do not get any fault codes and its very frustrating because the warning engine light can be 100 different things. Was wondering if I can get fault codes to show up on dash with the optional DID display or can I get the fault codes to show up on the DID display? Would appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction!

Yes, the DID will show fault codes. You can't be moving though, must be parked, (safety thing). I forget exactly how, but you just have to navigate around the menus a bit to find it.

I have been through the entire DID with the truck stopped of course and it does not show anything about fault codes only shows the regular stuff like what the analog gauges show. Looked all through the manual and cannot find anything about fault codes either? Not sure what to do?

I check the manual too and I did not find anything about reading faults either. The current model is not the same as the first generation. Maybe I am wrong, and these new ones can't display faults. I also read that the display being able to show faults is an extra option. Not sure if this is for the first or current generation of display. I will have to keep an eye out for one and try it.

The whole thing is a little frustrating because I was told that if I didn't have the DID computer then the fault codes would show up on my dash. So I am getting penalized for spending the extra coin to get the lectronix computer which apparently doesn't have the ability to show fault codes. And even more frustrating is that the PLC in the truck has all the fault codes on it. So basically I have to spend extra money and buy a code reader to hook into the J1939 connector. Ridiculous wouldn't u say?

    Displaying Diagnostic Trouble Codes

The ability to display diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) is an optional feature. Instrument Panel (IP) Fault code retrieval on 2007 products will require the customer to order the code below. If this code isn't ordered the driver/customer won't be able to retrieve fault codes without a tool.
16HKT IP CLUSTER DISPLAY On Board Diagnostics in Gauge Cluster

If the above feature is on the truck, codes may be displayed on either the gauge cluster or an optional vehicle information display (VID). The vehicle must be equipped with the option to display codes in both cases. Codes will not be displayed on the gauge cluster if the vehicle is equipped with the VID.

I found this today, it applies for 2007 and later Prostars. Basically even though you ordered the VID, you also needed to order the option to read codes in addition to the VID. This is stupid, reading fault codes should automatically be included with the VID. I didn't get a chance to play around today, but I will see if this is just a simple feature that we can enable, which is quick and easy to do. We don't have programming access to some codes. It was explained to me like this; the ability to display codes, and bypass the requirement for a service tool is a option you pay extra for since the truck is now able to display these codes instead of a scan tool. It is just another money grab accessory, but kinda useful. To display codes is a technology that International provides. The Lectronix display is a 3rd party supplier with their own technology to display but does not included scanning for and displaying faults unless you paid extra to have that feature enabled. It is dumb. Off the record... most OEMs and fleets do not want the drivers messing around with the truck and retrieving fault codes and try to fix the trucks themselves, especially when they are still under warranty. This is another reason it may be an option.

I did find the features in another Prostar. Every Lone or Prostar will have the same list of features, some are programmed in an others are not depending on how the unit is spec'd and ordered. For fault code display you there are three feature codes to be switched. You would need to turn off, "No reporting diagnostic in LCD display", then turn on "Diagnostic reporting for VID". There is a third for "Diagnostic reporting for LCD display", but I think the way it was coded you would turn on one or the other. Any International dealer with Diamond Logic Builder software can do this. Some techs can make changes and some can't. This can be done in a matter of minutes. The way the software and our laptops work, we must be connected to International through the internet and be logged on. When ever changes are made the updates are automatically uploaded to International servers. So International will know the feature was enabled. I have no idea if this will incur some kind of expense or charge direct from International. Best case scenario, next time your truck is in for service for something else, pull the tech aside, tell him what you want, offer to buy him a coffee, and you'll probably get it done for nothing! Good luck!
