2008 prostar oil temp / coolant temp question

That's normal, oil will be 20-40 hotter than coolant. The coolant and radiator are doing their job.

 

Remember that oil is the primary coolant for the pistons. So yes, completely normal.

 

you usually want oil temp to stay under 230F, usually by that point the coolant is already at 210 to 220F kicking the engine fan on if you dont have an overide switch.

My truck doesn't have a manaul overide to turn the fan on, P.I.T.A every once in a while. A few months ago climbing I 17 out of Phoenix, nearly 110 degrees outside, my oil temp got close to 245, and I backed off the throttle for a few minutes just to be safe.

That was due to the yo yo effect of the truck cycling the fan on and off un the heat.

FYI Most newer truck (2007) and later will run hotter, due most of the oil coolers being forced against the block due to all the emissions/pollution control junk. So normally on flat roads on a 70 degree day, an older truck should be running about 180 to 190 coolant a 200 to 210 oil.

2007 and later emissions 190 to 200 coolant and 220 or so on the oil.

It can also depend on what type of thermostats he truck has, and also when a newer truck does a parked or highway DPF regen it will run a lot hotter.

 

^^What he said^^ 240 should be the hi end for oil, always use a good oil, cheap insurance for the occasions your temps get hi in the desert climbing hills.

 

I Had a delete done on my maxforce13 Prostar, had the ecm tuned to 475 hp. So of course I'm running hotter than I was, is there anything I can do to reduce the oil temp besides running around with the heater on. I'm not overheating but I am consistently at 225 and when I'm climbing it creeps into the 240 range and its still cool outside. So I'm worried about what is going to happen come summer time. If I have the hp reduced to 450 will that help my heating issue any. Also, when the delete was done the egr cooler failed. Since the dpf system was gine there was no longer a need for the egr cooler so it was blocked off. Could that be effecting my temp as well.

 

If it's running that warm, even at lower power settings, you have one of two problems most likely. Either the sending unit is not sending an accurate signal, or the oil cooler isn't getting full flow of oil

 

Try climb at a higher rpm like 18 or 19 mine seem to stay cooler I guess better flow.
