    Hello everyone,

Here is my experience with prostar/maxxforce engine. So after driving 5 years the same truck I sold my 05 Volvo with Cummins 807k on the miles, I wanted to get something newer and good trucks are really not cheap. I went to International dealer with my boss and we purchased (3) 2013 prostar's and I purchased 2012 prostar with 304k miles.$57000. Diamond renewed truck.(new belts, filters, batteries, brakes, rims, tires, seats, shocks) and bunch of other smaller things. Diamond Renewed truck comes with 2 year's warrenty. After doing just one load I noticed I was losing coolant (started panicking) added some coolant and got back on the road, I was running OH to MN load and somehow got to MN and came back to OH, took the truck to dealer and they said both EGR'S are broke, After sitting home 3 weeks finally back on the road and then again problems, I noticed DPF light was coming on after 200 miles of driving I had to do parked regen over and over and finally somehow a made it back home, again to dealer. This time DOC ( diesel oxidation catalyst) was the problem, again 3 weeks home. Funny thing, all trucks my boss purchased failed EGR cooler withing one week, could not believe it. So I did 2 runs in almost two months with truck and now honestly I'm scared to go anywhere with this crap, Please stay away from Maxxforce engine and international truck all together, (dealer too busy), Good luck

Ithink there is a class action lawsuit over these engines. things like this can put a man in bankruptcy.

My fuel pump blew up last Friday. They were recalled a long time ago and mine just went with about 200,000 miles on it. The new Prostars have a cummins engine on them with DEF.

I feel your pain. Like stabob mentioned, a little research could have netted some great information. Those engines are famous for all the problems you mentioned and well documented here and other places. Any Maxxforce at about the 2 year or 200-300K mark really goes down hill fast. EGR coolers are a 100% failure rate which contaminates the DOC/DPF. My recommendation for purchasing a used unit like this to see on paper when the EGR cooler was done, high temp and low temp side, EGR valve and DOC/DPF, doser injector cleaning. Brakes and batteries are nice, but there are more important items to deal with. I am sorry you went through this. Every dealer knows this so I think this is more of a bad dealer issue. International is well aware of the quality and reliability issues and are honestly coming out with improved parts all the time. The know the engine sucks, but they are working to improve it to win back their reputation. Any time you are looking at buying a used truck with a DOC/DPF aftertreatment system, if the dealer has done nothing with those emission parts, I would not buy it because chances are they will be due for some expensive maintenance.

Yea my egr coolers went the first week on my diamond renewed truck. They replaced them under warranty no problem and that’s as far as my big problems have gone. My truck is still running smooth a year later. Just bought my 2nd truck which was a cummins though but I’m still driving the Maxxforce
