2008 International prostar cummins isx 1 200 000 km , started getting the VGT Code. Took it to my local trusted Mechanic , he replaced the actuator. Picked up the truck and code was still there. Mechanic said actuator needed to be calibrated at Dealer as he didn't have the program.

Dealer hooked up and tried to calibrate but it wouldn't and codes still came up and of course new ones came on.

VGT code , aftertreatement injector , crankcase code , DPF code.

Now dealer says turbo needs to be changed...could this be ? Took it back to local shop to get the Turbo done on Monday.

All the DPF / aftertreatment injector codes scare me ...

Did the actuator fail electronically or mechanically? If the teeth on the old actuator were worn the actuator needs replaced but the real problem is in the turbo VGT rail, over time the rail will get carbon in it and develop hard spots and take the actuator out. To correctly install and calibrate the actuator it has to be removed from the turbo, then an install indexing procedure is done in cummins insite, after the indexing you install the actuator on the turbo and then run the calibration.

chances are the crankcase code just means you need to have the crankcase filter replace or possibly you have a bad wire at the crankcase pressure sensor.

Not knowing what exact codes you have for aftertreatment injector and DPF its hard to say what you may be looking at there but first thing would be to test and clean the doser. With the local shop not having cummins insite it would be hard for them to do any testing or troubleshooting of the system.

Running it without calibration could have wiped out those little nylon teeth on the actuator..
Had the same thing happen to mine.It throwed codes like crazy.
Ended up having turbo replaced 2 weeks later.
I think the nylon teeth that broke off got into the turbo?

There no way for the teeth to get into the turbo, and if the teeth get worn out it's because the VGT rail in the turbo is sticking, also the teeth on the actuator are steel.

Ok, you can never ever drive your truck with a new turbo actuator without calibrating it. Basically during the calibration process the ECM finds where zero is. This calibration is done with actuator plugged in but not actually installed so the ECM can spin the drive gear around several times to locate its starting point. To properly diagnose this, once the actuator is taken off the actuator arm on the turbo has to freely move or sweep by hand to ensure nothing is jammed inside the turbo. There is also a starting point the actuator arm has to be in during the calibration process when the actuator is installed. If none of this was done, I am sorry to say you wasted your time and money and chances are the issue is internal with the turbo.

    Hi heavyd,

Actually mechanic said he did calibrate it but the code stayed on hence why he told us to go to the shop to have it checked out as he didn't understand why the code was still on it. The actuator arm on the turbo ( the lever type thing with gears) was very hard to move so im assuming both actuator and turbo might of been toast.

truck has 1, 300 000 km so turbo and actuator was due anyways ? Going Back Monday to get the turbo on it.

    Any thoughts ?

The mechanism inside will eventually fail and/or get clogged with soot and seize up. The new actuator is likely still ok. You should be able to get a reman turbo without the actuator.

    jameson1985 Thanks this.

Yes that's exactly what I am doing .... I plan on keeping this truck for a long time .... im running a team on it and putting 400 000 km per year on the truck.

I hope this cummins keeps rolling for a long time... what is the highest mileage you have seen on a cummins isx from this era ?
