My apu stopped working and I had my mechanic take a look and he said he can fix it for around 800+ in parts. Is this worth fixing or would it be proper to just remove such a big anchor out of the truck. I'm sure its going to be a PITA removing this but my mechanic said he can do it but some parts he may not be able to remove because its directly connected to the radiator and fuel lines. Thoughts?

I just read in a thread earlier where someone stated that DOT would allow 400 lbs (maybe 500) for the APU when you cross the scales, but havent further researched it and cant even remember which thread it was.
As far as fuel savings and payback time for repairs I would think it would be well worth fixing, but Im sure there are more knowledgeable people in this forum!

Fix it. An APU pays for itself in no time and $800 is nothing compared to a new one or what you will loose idling your engine!

Get it fixed.Between fuel savings and wear and tear on the engine when you idle you'll be glad you spent the $800. That being said the APU is not needed to run your truck so its something that can be put off for a bit if you don't have the $800

Fix it, they are worth there weight in gold in the winter. My truck did a lot of sitting over the winter and it was nice just to go over and fire up the APU to keep a charge on the batteries from time to time and thaw things out inside.

I agree with getting it fixed. They're also worth their weight in gold during the summer months, if you've got some sitting to do and it's hotter than Hades.....

Even though the weight exemption (400 lbs) was signed into law back in the mid 2000's, it is not a mandate. At least, not yet, meaning individual states can either allow it or not. Right now, 5 states and D.C. do not recognize the exemption. Other states have actually increased the allowance to 550 lbs.

You would figure CA, with their "Green" nazis, would allow for it, but they don't. As for NC, and KY, those 2 have me stumped. D.C. - Oh well and finally, RI and HI.

It would be nice if MAP-21 made it a mandate. Pretty pathetic that all the other states, except for 5 and our capital (Where the very agency that came up with this is located) can't get on board with the other 45.

At Raven they tell us we can be over 400-500 because of APU. I haven't had an issue and even with loads weighing 44k to 48k pounds I still get green light bypassing scales.

The one time I did get called in I was told by DOT to go around back, fix it, and then come back over scale. Fixed it and was let go.
