    1996 9200 IH Series 60 Detroit

When I turn the key on all the gauges swipe like they should but in just a few seconds the speedo, tach, oil psi, water temp and the Detroit Diesel dash display all just lock up.

I did a search on here and it looks like a few others have had this problem and in one of the posts it was mentioned that it might be a problem with the abs circuit so I checked that breaker and it was tripped. I reset it and it just trips again. I hope it is not the ecm

Where do I start looking to try and solve this?

    Thanks for any info

    Mike

It could be your dash board. The board all your gauges plug in to. Friend of mine had the same problem and that was his solution.

    Thanks xsetra

    You mean circuit board right?

Datalink wiring between ECM and dash is corrupted. Check wiring from firewall on right hand side over engine and down to the ECM for any spots where is rubbing through. Also if this truck had any satellite systems in the past and was removed check for any antenna wiring on the outside that may be corroded.

I have not had much time to work on this, to busy working. It seems like the gauges get there power from the abs feed from battery circuit. This breaker gets hot and blows and when I reset it the gauges work. I looked at the big Bendix abs controller in the back of the frame rails and there is corrosion on the top cover and I think water might be getting in there.

    Any Thoughts?

    Thanks Mike

A bad ABS module can certainly corrupt the datalink. You can disconnect the main harness connections at the ABS, or there should be a big green coloured connector for the ABS under the 5th wheel area you can disconnect. If the problem goes away you know the ABS module is no good.

Thanks Heavyd for the help. Like I said I have not had much time to work on it, but yesterday the tach, speedo and water temp gauge came back. I don't think I ever lost the volt gauge. But the oil pressure gauge is still going up to 50 lbs and staying there. It seems that water might of got in the abs module and we have had some dry weather the last few days and it might of dried out in there. The module's cas is really corroded. Does the oil pressure gauge get it's information in a different way than the water temp tach and speedo? I am just wondering why this gauge is not working and the others are.

I was only able to get one of the plugs off the abs module I will get the other one off this weekend.

    Thanks mike

Speedo, tach, oil pressure, volt, water temp come through the datalink. You can test the gauge easy. The chrome bezel turns counter clockwise a bit and then you can pull the gauge right out. It just plugs into the circuit board in behind by 4 big pins. You can swap the oil pressure gauge with volt or coolant temp gauge and see if they respond the same way. The only thing different between the oil pressure, coolant temp and volt gauge is the decal face. Other gauges like fuel level and diff temps work differently and not interchangeable.

Yes I meant the circuit board in the dash. Sounds like Heavyd has it figured out.
    Good luck.

This is what I did today. I unplugged the abs connectors on the back of the module, then I was able to put the breaker back in the abs slot in the fuse panel. Oil pressure gauge still didn't work. Swapped the oil pressure gauge with the water temp gauge, the water temp gauge did the same thing in the oil pressure gauge slot (didn't work) and the oil temp gauge worked in the water temp slot. So it is not the gauge.

    So what is next?

This all started I think when the abs module went bad.

    Thanks Mike
