Have mechanic at our shop and he doesn't have much experience on semi trucks so I will try on here.Have kenworth dumptruck and one driver said u-joints were bad and the mechanic just put on strap and bolts,I seen him moving the U-joint up and down against the stop or tags that the cup rest on,the mechanic just put u joint straps on and tighten them.I thought the u-joint should fit tight in between the stop were the cups with needle bearing are, hope this explains what I mean thank you

When in doubt, change it out! U-joints are dirt cheap, even for a brand name spicer, compared to spitting out a shaft and the related towing and repair charges!

the yoke could be worn. the caps should not move after tightening the straps.

cheap (relatively) & easy to change...there is no reason NOT to replace a u-joint that has any slop in it.

Change it in the shop or change it on the job site, it's your call..

Shouldn't be any movement after a new one's installed- up, down or side to side.

As the members have said, fix it. Letting it go is only making bigger problems. It is going to cause vibration. When it breaks, if your lucky the truck will uneventfully come stop. If you have my luck, the driveshaft flopping around is going to rip out other things under the truck....:biggrin_25521:

The problem could be the yoke is worn as well, the new U-joint will come with straps but if the cup come loose under the straps again in a short time the yoke is worn.

If in doubt fix it! Loose a ujoint will cost you air line, air bags, broken driveline, that will get expensive!!!!
