We have a Kenworth T-700 with the Cummins ISX engine in it. We are currently going through a gallon of oil every 2000 miles or less. Cummins says that this is normal. In my Freightliner with the Series 60 I have 665,000 miles on it and have never added a gallon between changes (25,000 miles) and don't understand the consumption issue. BTW...engine only has 170,000 miles on it. Please help with some advice/answers.

My ISX doesn't use the first gallon until 12k miles.

BTW, this same question has been covered in the general maintenance forum.

yes for this engine it has become the norm. you need to get an oil consumption sheet and document oil consumption. cummins states 1 quart to 500 miles is to much. the problem is carbon packing on the piston above the top ring. the carbon packs in between the piston and liner and is so abrasive it polishes the liner out. cummins has a piston that is a little smaller that helps the issue.... what do they mean by helps? does that mean it takes a little longer to pack full of carbon? Ive seen engines with 120,000 need rebuilt due to carbon packing. this is a widely known issue and getting help from your local dealer shouldnt be a problem. if your warranty is up see if you can get policy to help cover the cost

YIKES! Really? Is there anything they can put in fuel to rid piston of carbon? That is not good at 120000 Miles!

i'll use 3 quarts between 15k mile oil changes.

about 1 quart if i mainly cruise in the lower rpm's. higher rpms for the hills.

    600k miles.

Check the Blow by when idling see if your blow by is dripping oil or if your truck has excessive Smoking when shifting gears

Does your truck take DEF fluid?...If so, then its a common problem, but should be fully covered under warranty. Take it to a cummins shop instead of the dealer. There are some updates to the engine to fix it, but you will need new piston liners as well.

Its all hear-say unfortunately,...My O/o friend who does all his own work to his truck told this to me. If you have a CM2250 engine (he does) that takes DEF fluid, there is a warranty fix and update for it. His truck did this. He is polish, so its difficult to say what they did exactly, he doesn't know some English words, but he ended up getting liners, a new fuel pump, and more I think. This is all I know about it. His truck was sucking oil a lot, and they blamed it on clogged crank case filters, etc,...etc,...etc,...Until he bugged them enough that they looked deeper into the problem, where he told me there was an update for the engine for it. His engine no longer has those problems, I do know this. Maybe I try to call and ask him about it again.
