Hey guys, first post and thought I would ask some questions to people with experience. Gonna be pulling the trigger on a new T800 Kenworth soon. I run a farming operation and will be pulling a tri axle grain trailer which will go 100 miles from home at the most..and pulling off of soft fields and yards is more of a concern than fuel economy. Dealer is trying to get me into a Paccar 500 mx instead of the ISX. Advice? We have a 3500 RDS Allison in our tandem grain truck and it has been awesome to say the least. Was wanting to try the new TC10 TS Allison in this truck but again the dealer is pushing ultra shift plus 18 speed. Advice? I really like the truck look as compared to the new 880 and was gonna go full lockers, 4.10, 46 rears, 205 wheel base, day cab...anyway...you guys must have been running the DEF systems for a while...are they improving in reliability? Any info appreciated
Thanks,
New 2014 T800 Kenworth

I'm not familiar with the Paccar motors, so I'd say go for the ISX. I'm assuming that in the field, you will run into soft spots. For that reason, I would never use the automated manual trans. If you need an auto, stick with the Allison. The auto shift is not capable of the quick shifts you can do in a conventional standard trans. It would be stuck in first gear until you get to a solid area. I used to work for a manure spreading outfit, and have seen my share of soft fields and areas to get stuck, and if I needed to shift for any reason, I had to do those real quick throttle blips and a quick move with the shifter. I don't think the auto shift units can pull that off.
Oh, I run a 2014 Pete with a 450 ISX with DEF, and I have not had any issues with it. -
I have an older T-800 day cab heavy chassis , and love it...... The (new emmisions) motor not so much, but that's another story. Here's some reading for you if you haven't seen it already.

I'd do a new kw glider if I wanted a new ride for local work.
ps the center mount front tow hook is the way to go off-road .Last edited: Oct 14, 2013

If it were me, id avoid of paccar mx and go with the cummins ISX. Knowing the conditions, id opt for an 18spd. As PCfreak mentioned, if you need an auto, go for the allison. My old company ordered a new one and hasn't had any problems with it since they got it. -
MX with the ultra shift plus, depending on weight the 18spd might be over kill. You tube eaton's web page you will be impressed the the MXP.

I think I would consider a glider built with a non-egr engine and avoid the new emissions issues. It will most likely be more reliable and cheaper to operate and maintain.

We just ordered 3 t-800s and our dealer in Sioux City Ia said to stay away from the Paccar. Especially in farm application. They have had nothing but trouble. Defiantly go full lockers. We got the 550 cummins with 13 speed.
