Has anyone had any good experiences with this engine or is there only bad to report? I know about how much trouble they have been but just wondering if the only thing that gets press is the bad stories, there has to be a few of these engines that worked like they are supposed to.

I talked to a friend (a CAT mechanic) and he was saying he is only seeing basic maintenance issues when these engines come in and not the big issues being reported. So my question is has anyone had a truck with this engine and only needed routine maintenance or just didnt spend months in the shop getting repairs?

Thats the problem. You cant trust the mechanics. You go in for one problem and come out with something else. And the old problem is not even fix. They want more money more money and dont get the job done. It use to mean something when you could say i got a cat under my hood but now , not so good

Sorry to say but I wouldn't own a Cat newer than a 2003 bridge motor but the 2002 6NZ and older were the best, when Cat put 2 turbos and vva's on the engine it was the start of their downfall , when they added the ard head that was the final nail in the coffin,in the shop where I worked we referred to the 2007 2008 2009 SDP as So DisaPpointed. I rertired from a caterpillar dealer in January after working there for 31 years. because of the crap cat has put out over the last 10 years. Hate to say it but I see RED in your future Cummins red. I would like to see all of Caterpillars engineers that helped design the acert layed head to toe and watch Robbie Knievel jumb them in a Mack using a VVA head for the ramp, good luck.

As a mechanic those engineers gave you job security. You should buy them steak dinners lol.

well maybe so. But like everything else it runs out. And truckers move on to something better than a cat. So enjoy your steak while you can.

Job security? I retired because I would make more money from my pension then I did working because we were off so much. (no work on pay) we went from a engine shop to a full service shop because no one was buying anything with a Cat in it. we had to make work and what work we got couldn't keep all of us busy, we had a couple of guys quit and since I hit the golden number to retire I did it so the other guys could get more hours. besides the fact I was too set in my ways to go from tune ups and overhauls to doing brakes, (that #### is to heavy.) when Cat came out with the 3406B in 83 we went from two of us working on trucks and that was 1 full time truck guy, and I would go from working on the tractor side to help out, we got up to 10 guys and 2 shifts, we had so many Cats in the area the local Cummins dealer closed down, we stayed fairly busy till the acert came out in 2004, we had a local customer that bought the first 6 550 acert C15s on the west coast he was so happy with them that he bought 6 2002 6NZ C15s from a wrecking yard and replace all 6 acerts while they were still under warranty. after Cat added the ard head in 2007 the wheels fell off and in 2009 Cat quit making truck engines. Why build it if you can't sell it, they started building a Cat truck with a Cat engine but it's a combined effort with International and Cat doesn't build the engine . if I did buy an engineer a steak dinner I would probably beat him with it lol.

Your jakes quit working? My MBN C15 has a pacbrake. One time a spring broke and it made a fluttering, sputtering sound when I used them on stage 3 but there was no braking. It cost me about $300 when the local CAT house diagnosed and fixed it. They went ahead and replaced all 12 springs while they had the valve covers off and were in there. The springs are cheap. Most of that cost was labor. Don't know if that's your trouble but if so it should be pretty easy for them to diagnose and not break your bank too bad to fix it.
