Well the suspension should be buttoned up on Wednesday so i can finally take it for a spin. If i like how it drives then it's officially mine!! So my 2 weeks notice will be put in at work then take it home to get it all cleaned up!

The e-model can get high 5's low 6's all day if you drive it right and have it setup right. We run W9's with Prentice 120 loaders on them and always loaded to 80,000. Haul many oversized loads also. We haul utility poles. We have 13s, a 15, and an 18. All with 3.70 gears.

I set them up this way.

    550HP 1850PT 5Ek flash.
Flash file 126-9519 PM 42 (pre low-nox file)
    FLS 80 FTS 0
Set all injectors to 5232 then run manual cutout test watching the injectors...I have a spreadsheet I made from the numbers the good people here posted on number of cc's injected per trim number. I run the cutout test changing the numbers until I can get the 6 as close as possible while using the highest cc trim numbers. If you want I can send you the spreadsheet. Works well, you get the highest trim number, and a smooth running engine. You can't just run all the same number unless the injectors are matched.

Our drivers love this setup...they pull with most anything on the road, and get high 5's and low 6's. If you want anymore information on what I said just send me a PM. You'll have to have someone that has ET and a way to flash the ECM. I can get you the file if you need it.

I'll check around and see if i can find someone to do that and let you know. Thanks for the info! Now what's going to be the biggest difference between the 3.55s and 3.70s? I'm guessing the same concept as a car. Higher number takes off faster but runs higher rpms at highway speeds

You'll drop gears less with 3:70's in the pulls. Most people think it's too low for 5 axle highway trucks. I disagree and think it's the perfect gear to run taller profile tires and 65mph (or slower if you prefer) all day netting excellent fuel economy. Mine doesn't do bad humming along at 1,700 rpms 75mph all day if the loads aren't too heavy but really 3:55's would do better at that speed.

Well i test drive it today and after i learned how to shift it life was good!! Lol. I say that because i was told it was an 18 speed. So i thought the tranny was screwed up because the splitter wouldn't go in with the range finder up and it dropped a great when i tried to shift to the last gear. Then was told it was a 15 double over when i got back but eaton is saying based on the shift pattern I'm describing that it's a 15 speed rto. Bottom gears are 1,3,4 top is r, 2, 5. So now that i know that it explains everything! First experience with anything like that! But on a good note only a couple minor things that they will address this week

    Sparky,

sounds like you made the right decision. Good luck and from it seems, you know more than your dad. While I am a fan of Volvos, I wouldn't use one for cattle work. A Peterbilt or KW would my choice. If you wanted too, you could easily pull a cattle trailer with the set up you have.

All our trucks except three have 3.70's. They do much better in the hills but the 3 with 3.55's get on average 2-3/10ths better. Just my experience. These are with 10's and 13's.

Thanks kh. That was my thoughts too. I currently drive a midroof and it is comfortable, rides nice and turns right but sucks hauling fuel. Struggles. My thought is there is a reason you don't see people using them for logs, dump and other specialty loads. They all haves Pete's, kw and western stars. Thanks for the info scrapper. I have to call eaton tomorrow to find out for sure what mine is but it's either the 13 or 15 rto. Unless the shop knows but i didn't even think to ask. I could be wrong but from what i have found with the last 2 gears reversed and the fact that you can't move the splitter when the range finder is up i don't think I'm too far off

Sounds like a 15 speed.... Nice for heavy loads . I had a 96 kw with that trans in it. High gear was up by the dash.... I do miss it a little.
