Can anyone tell me what to expect for fuel economy on the w900l? I'm going to be an oo and a new truck came available that I'm looking at. Specs are cat 3406e recently rebuilt, remanned 18 speed set up for end dump and permitted for 102k. Someone was telling me that setup i wouldn't get more then 4-4.5 mpg but he has never driven one. The other truck i was looking at was an 01 international 9900i with a cat 6nz 18speed just rebuilt with a diesel freaks module that gets 5-5.5 mpg. Any info would be awesome!

Depends how you drive it. With a 98 W900L 60 series Detroit 12.7 470hp 10speed overdrive 370 rears we averaged 6.5 mpg pulling livestock generally running 85,000 to 98,000lbs Midwest to eastCoast. Got a 03 W900L 500hp Cat 18speed OD 355 rears pulling livestock and reefer mostly legal weight it was all we could do to get 5.4 mpg but that truck had more emissions garbage than the model you are looking at.

YOU are the biggest factor in MPG.
I know guys running long hood trucks with big Cats, that get better than the plastic truck crowd running DD's etc.
Also, what gears does it have?

Thanks for the info. My step dad thinks he knows everything because his buddies have them. He hauls livestock in Iowa with a Volvo and thinks i should get one. My thought is with all the dump trailers and such running old classic style trucks with big hoods and big motors in the northeast there has to be a reason. Gearing I'm not sure. The lady was supposed to email me pics and info yesterday and never did so i should hopefully find out today. When i do I'll post the details. I know the international has a rebuilt 475 cat pushed to 550 and he has been running a bully dog on it for the last year but if i got that one it comes with the diesel freaks harness. I can't imagine the kw would get much worse fuel economy. Plus it looks nicer with a bigger bunk. Int has 48 inch and kw i believe a 60. Just want o make the right choice s it's my first truck. And i also know 1 mpg can make a 20k a year difference as far as fuel goes if you average over 2k miles a week with diesel being 4 bucks a gallon in ny

The driver makes the biggest input on mpg. Drive either one of them slow and easy and both should hit 6 and higher you out hot dogging forget it you will get 5-5.5 mpg. Me i drop one gear and drive 64 mph and do over 6 easy with reefer when hooked to flat 7's no problem thats with w9l 6nz 3.08 rears thats why i drop gear run either one around 1450 rpm should see best mpg and dont hold it to floor all the time and no stop light drag races with steering wheel holders. The international will be lighter weight and easier to get around with tighter turning radius. I know this because i used to have a 2001 9900i with 6nz 13spd with 3.55 rears and i have a 2003 w9l right now my w9 dosent turn with a hoot. And weight is big issue when i pull the reefer. Money maker international. KW if you can deal with weight and poor turning.

With 6 axles and 107k in a dump trailer you'll be lucky if you get 6 mpg with any truck.... And with winter coming plan on 5 1/2.......

P.S. No receipts on that overhaul=no overhaul..... Cut their price.

Turning i can deal with. I didn't even ask what the empty weight was to compare. But the international is double framed plus a couple extra storage boxes so i would imagine they might with close. It'll be permitted for 102k so i will have some wiggle room anyway. My biggest thing is comfort. I was uncomfortable in that international when i took it around the block and the mattress is against the seat. So since i have kids i want to bring with on occasion the kw seems a little better. And the international is a 475 horse 6nz rebuilt to 550 horse with a bulldog that he keeps turned up so I'm thinking the wear on that might be a factor for problems in the future
