Hey all,

I'm new here so i hope i've posted this in the correct place. I've been looking everywhere for an answer to this issue and it seems to baffle all i speak to .

I have a 2009 KW T660 with a cummins ISX and an Eaton Ultrashift 10spd. Yesterday i was pulling a hill with a heavy load of water in the box, doing about 50mph. A slower truck cut me off to pass an even slower one in front of him. I mashed my brakes and slowed to 25. When the hill peaked i attempted to accelerate and the truck wouldnt. Going down the hill it got up to speed but i lost my jake brakes. Now, since then, Any time i try to accelerate and the RPMs get above 1200 it feels like the tranny slips. This only happens from 12- 1500. after that and below that, its fine. It happens more in 10th gear, but will do it in any. Its making hill climbing near impossible. I spoke to a mechanic at the KW dealer, and he was baffled. Said while it sounds like the clutch, it should get worse with higher RPM. There are no warning lights or codes produced. When it happens i hear the turbo spool and then feel the slip, the rpms drop and it loses speed and tries again, with the same result. At first i thought it was the turbo acting up, but now i'm just not sure. I cleaned the IMAP sensor for good measure but it didn't change the issue. I'm a new owner op and haven't even made my first truck payment yet. I'm hoping its an easy fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Welcome to Truckers Report, Super84. I'm stumped also regarding your problem. I can only think that it's something to do with your turbo as you describe a loss of power. I've had turbos go offline before but the KW mech is stumped? I canna figure that out. Hopefully someone else here at TR can help.

You need a new clutch. Get the clutch inspected ASAP. We had some Internationals with those automatics where the clutch plates cracked and grenaded the bell housing.

The reason you're not getting slippage below 1200 and above 1500 is because the peak torque band of your engine is 1200-1500 RPM. It will get worse, and you'll see it slipping more outside of that band as time goes on.

You did get a dyno test before you accepted delivery of the truck, didn't you?

I didn't get a dyno done when I purchased. Wishing I did now though. The company I purchased from only gave me 48 hours after signing to get the dyno done.. I didn't even pick it up till 5 days after signing so it was too late. What does a clutch job cost on these automatics?

Hunh... Personally, I wouldn't buy from a dealer that wouldn't allow a dyno test and a complete pre-purchase inspection to be done before closing a deal.

As for the cost, I have no clue. We have company mechanics that handle most everything.

Are you driving with cruse control on when it slips and revs. go down, try adj. clutch 1st. then drive in man. mode and use foot control till you find problem, some have self adj. clutch others dont, have it adj. before you throw in $ for a repair?

1200 to 1500 will get you a new clutch installed at pretty much any drive line or suspension shop. Another 500 or so at a dealer. A clutch is a fairly easy one day job that anyone smarter than the average Petro/ta mechanic can do.

I'm confused, if the clutch is slipping, the rpms should go UP while it is slipping, but the road speed will not, or even decrease. I think you have some other kind of engine issue. What happened that you "lost" your jake brakes?

RPMs are probably confusing the computer and it's trying to shift or something.

The dealership did allow me to inspect it, it was my own time constraints that was the issue. I live in jersey, the truck was in GA. I only went down for a day to Inspect and sign papers, then picked it up later that week. I had it dot'd but the only dealership in the area with a dyno closed at 5 and I was too late. It ran beautifully during the test drive so I signed. They said any problems found within 48 hours they would fix.. But picking it up 5 days later made that impossible.

It happens with the cruise and the pedal. Worse on cruise as it just goes full throttle on an incline. Immediately after it happens the Jakes and cruise no longer work until I turn them off and back on.

The rpms do blip up maybe 100 before dropping, so that may be the computer taking over. I'm on a run till Monday so I'm hoping it will make it that far. I'm babying the hell out of it and coasting as much as possible. Fingers crossed. Here's a link to a video of it happening. It's not very good, but you can hear it and how it runs perfect at 1500.
