    Hi Guys,

I'm a firefighter and we have a Kw T800 fire truck with an issue. in low rpm the engine vibrating also, when I press the puddle black smoke comes out of the exhaust.

    truck info:

    Kenworth, T800 - 2012 year - engine model ISX 500.

as you know it's a fire truck and I'm a fraid the issue will esclate during an emergency when the engine is on in long time period.

If it were my call, I'd start by pulling codes and performing the injector leak test.

You have three options. There's a code reader which can plug directly to the ECM... downside is that it'll only read PMCI (engine ECM) codes, and won't read aftertreatment system faults. The other option is PowerSpec, which is a read-only program... this can be plugged in directly to the engine ECM via the harness above the intake manifold (again, with the downside of it not being able to read aftertreatment system codes), or through the J1939 interface. The third - and best way - would be to go to a shop with Insite... again, it can be plugged in directly to the ECM or through the J1939 interface (which would require a diagnostic link, such as Inline 6 or NexIQ). The only one of those which will be able to perform the injector leak test is Insite.

If it's a 2012 it has a DPF, and if there is black smoke coming out of the exhaust then the DPF is cracked allowing it to pass through. You still have to find the cause of the excessive black smoke on top of the DPF issue.

This. Any time you see black smoke out of a truck with a DPF it will have to be replaced. However there is some good news in that, Cummins is releasing reman'd DPF's now, so instead of spending $2600 on a new one it'll only cost ~$970.
