Do they hold orientation every week or only certin times of the month?

Right now things are slow AND the company is pushing the envelope of having more incoming drivers than they have trucks and trainers. To be fair to folks who are job hunting they have cut down on the frequency of orientation classes. If they didn't then they'd have people going through orientation and then being sent home to wait ungodly amounts of time to get a trainer and then having to wait another ungodly amount of time to get a truck. That is not fair to the new hire. When people are hired they want to get to work as soon as possible....not hurry up and wait. Then there is the fact that due to the economy and this time of year being an annual slow period anyway, they also have to think about the drivers they already have and not flood themselves with new drivers to the point that they have too many drivers and not enough freight to keep them rolling.
Earlier in 2008 it seemed they were holding orientation every week. For now it seems to be more like every 4-6 weeks and not at all over the holidays.
It should start picking up soon. They have to harvest sometime

When I called to check on my App, the recruiter answering the 800 # (Mike) told me I was scheduled for February 2nd orientation and that I had to call back next week to confirm with 'my' recruiter (Lindsey)...
so...what do I need to take along...how long will i be there...do I leave from there with my trainer, or will I have to sit at home and wait for a trainer? -
-
My recruiter also seemed a bit dissapointed I couldn't start sooner. From the sounds of it, they need some warm bodies. -
They aren't in too much need of warm bodies; they don't have the trucks to put them in. Yes, they are staying busy. They have had an on and off hiring freeze in place to slow down the amount of new drivers coming into the company.

Well, I'm here in Jackson and just completed the second day of Orientation. Everything is going well and pretty much just like everybody out there told me it would be. I've met so many friendly folks at the KLLM Offices and Terminal, along with those in my class. A few Owner/ Operators, some rehires, and a few recent Graduate New Drivers like me.
I've had a few P/M's from you guys and got a heads up on the facilities and the Orientation itself. And you were right. However, the Physical has gotten more "physical." In addition to a basic Physical and drug screen, there is the agility test, of lifting boxes to a shelf, climbing steps, crawling on the floor, etc, but nothing that will kill you. They're just making sure you can do the job. The Motel is clean and comfortable and in a decent area of town. Not the Hilton mind you, but functional and remodeled. The free continental breakfast is.......... well..... Free!!! Several Fast food and sit down restaurants next door or a short walk, a Wally World and Kroger. The KLLM Orientation classroom is on the grounds of the Motel. We do the classroom there and at the Terminal. Great Guy's, Donnie and Sam are running the class in addition to guest appearances of the various KLLM staff from the various departments. Lot's of information on safety, driver health, the reefer units, policy and benefits. And of course the always endless paperwork. We ride between the motel and terminal on the KLLM "Short Bus", which has a great air conditioning system (if you open the windows and drive 50 mph) and it also rides like.... well, lets just say it has the same suspension system as a skate board. To be honest, we're having a blast. All of the drivers and staff have a good sense of humor and make the load a littler lighter. They feed us lunch everyday. Uuuuhh! Well, that's what they call it anyway, but it's filling and somewhat palitable.
One more full day tommorrow, and hopefully out on the road, depending on when the trainers get here and start picking us up. I'll keep you guys posted, but I'm afraid I'm going to be busy over the next few days, as I hit the road. So far, it seems that I've made the right decision, even though I had to wait a little while. I feel good about this company.
