I am happy to be healthy again been 20 months since I was in a truck. I look forward to starting orientation at 6:30am tomorrow morning. I made a deal with my wife and kids I would not go OTR. I just happen to be looking at multiple sites and decided to apply to Knights Port and Rail division. I should be running to the San Diego or Long Beach ports 3x's a week. Drug test will be no problem, I just past a DOT physical but I guess I get one with their doc on Tuesday. Anyone know what work steps is? I have it Tuesday with my physical I am assuming it is like the HPE. Any insite and advise would be appreciated. I assume the driving test is just dont grind too bad or hit anything should be interesting being out of a truck for a bit.

Congrats on the new job and nice to hear your back on the HEALTHY side of things

Work steps is like a "physical fitness" test. They just want to make sure you can physically do the job and don't have any undeclared problems like a bum knee, bad back, etc. If you're in reasonable shape you should be fine. I did it once a long time ago and it was pretty basic.

Good to see you back CAGE!

Good luck with your start at Knight. Yes step test is a physical test. Simulating getting in and out of a truck for 5 mins, lift a crate with 25lbs in it and carry it about 50 feet, set it down and carry it back like 10 vtimes. Have you done port work before?

Thanks guys I hope the step test is basic, I was very sick and afterwards I ballooned WAY up and am now getting back down and into shape I went from 260 when I last drove down to 220 WAY up to 310 and right now am 275. I have been going to the gym and working with a personal trainer so I do ok. I still get winded a bit easy from my BP med I am on and have been on all of driving just changed the dosage. I appreciate all the feedback. drozzer I have been to ports a few times with previous refrigerated company but not as an intermodal driver this is my 1st intermodal driving position.

Cage, dealing with port equipment, make sure its all good. There is also a lot of waiting involved. Wait to get in, find a frame that is legal, wait to get the container loaded, wait to get out. Also make sure your weights are good. Most importantly, they are top heavy. 96" wide. Watch your turns. Hardest part is closing the doors sometimes. I wish you the best. I didn't care for it when I did it here. Paid by the hour but just too much sitting for me.
