I'm currently in the Atlanta area. I have not receive a CDL yet. I called Knight and they told me all I have to do is go to the DMV an get a permit, they will train me. I'm trying to see just how true this is? Will I get paid while I'm training? How much could I expect to make driving local or regional?

Have you checked on the Knight web site? I checked into Knight 2 years ago, and they don't train - but their subsidiary Squire does. I chose not to go with them because both Squire and Knight don't pay enough. You can probably do better.

What company would you prefer? My only problem is that I don't have my CDL yet and I don't want to go get a permit and then can't find a job anywhere.

You'll be paid like $350 a week while training. 28 cents per mile during your 90 day solo and 33 cents per mile after that. You can expect to average about 2000 miles a week.

I would suggest applying to Central. They have a yard in Conley, will hire then train you(including permit), and you'll gain reefer experience which could prove helpful in getting a better job latter.

OP go to carrrier questions click Knight in subforum and ask Knight drivers.

And don't let these people steer you to refer hauling at a starter co.

Want refer exp? Get up at Midnight and go to your local Grocery Whse and watch those poor suckers racing to the dock to be the 1st in line to hire a lumper so they can hopefully get unldd by daybreak.

I worked for Knight and wife drove for Central. Central is OTR. Knight is regional. Reefer experience can land you a lot of great local jobs like Salidino's, Sysco, US Foods, etc. Don't try and get everything you want in your first job. Do your research and find the company you want to retire at and then go out and get the experience you'll need to work at that company. Sacrifice a little now for what you really want later.

Knight does train from scratch now in Olive Branch, MS. They have both dry and refer Your choice. Knight has a terminal on Shirley just West of I285 off I20 Atlanta. You can call that terminal directly and speak to a recruiter. They Might let you make an appt for a face-to-face.

Are you saying that I could call the atl terminal to have a face to face? One told me I have to get a permit first. I don't want to go get a permit then I don't get hired.

I don't know if they will allow a face-to-face. But you can ask for one. Worst they can do is say no. You need to understand that any company that trains intends to hire you if you make the grade. None of them do CDL training only. They should prequalify you as far as: work history, dot physical, and driving record.
