I was under the impression that they had some level of tuition reimbursement. I will check on this on Monday and let you know. If not Knight talk to Pat adn Bill at ITDS, they know quite a bit about the different companies and will help youo chose one that is a good fit for you.

Testing out of training today and hopefully getting my own truck this afternoon. So far all is as advertised, good trainer from whom I learned a great deal. I am a bit nervous about the test especially the backing part of it but I guess time will tell.

If things go well I will be under my first load from Joliet to the house tomorrow.

    Wish me luck.

I passed the driving test, waiting in Joliet for my truck to show up. It is supposed to be here at 4:00 about an hour. 1st Load in the morning headed to the house to pick up my stuff then hopefully on the road for a while.

Glad to hear that it is working out for you. Have them on my radar, but not as my first choice. Would like to keep seeing how your experience goes. What is their training pay?

Training pay is $400/wk, I was in training for 4 weeks. It looks to be comparable to other companies training pay.

I will continue to post my experience with Knight here.

  8. OverDrive

OverDrive "A Watchman on the Walls"

I'm several years removed from the Knight Squire program having hired on in 2003 prior to their training new drivers and when Knight was known for being a 'driver's co." The Knight rigs I saw along the road driving the US/Mex border back then were both new tractors & trailers and ALWAYS clean. The drivers I met then (Knight had about 700 tractors) were seasoned/experienced drivers who 'loved' working there. The 1st couple of months I was averaging 3K+ miles/wk and always had a pre-plan waiting for me.

But I could see it changing as it grew larger and becoming what I left---a Swift wannabe!

I was fortunate for the 1st 1 1/2 yrs of driving for a DM who was one of the Knight boys who later became the El Paso Term Mgr (and later as many of the Knight boys/cousins left trucking!). After that, I was shuffled around with a new DM about every 2-3 mos. who didnt know me or my reputation for safely delivering on-time freight and I became just another driver in the mill.

Things changed and I could see that the experienced/seasoned drivers were leaving as Knight just wanted ppl to fill the seats of their growing business at around 1700 tractors.

My advice for students/new drivers is that Knight doesnt really want experienced drivers and having to pay them for their experience, but aims for the newbie-to-2 yr drivers to maximize their profits. So your attitude shud be to 'use them' as they are using YOU and get that 1st yr experience and move on to a smaller/independent co. where you will be appreciated (and paid) for safely delivering on-time freight.

And, btw, dont let the big trucking co.s ruin your attitude, as I said b4, "60% of new CDL drivers leave the trucking industry within their 1st 9 mos."

Quick update, I got my truck a week ago on Thursday and pulled my first load to the house on Friday. I had the weekend off to move my stuff into the truck adn take care of personal stuff. I have been on the road solo since last Monday, I have about 2800 miles in for the week and am currently in Savannah GA waiting on a load that will take me to one of our shops for a PM.

Overall I am quite happy with Knight, they are providing good support and the miles they promised so I really have nothing to complain about. My truck is a 2012 Volvo 670 with about 250,000 miles. Not a bad truck for a rookie. It will probably be replaced in the next year so I should get a new(er) truck then.

I have set the truck up for myself with the things I need to be comfortable on the road and there is still storage space left for winter survival stuff so I am happy with the truck.

Sounds good. How is the truck treating you? Awesome to see they have freight around my neck of the woods. I am just about 30 miles outside of Savannah, GA. Do their trucks have APU's? What are they governed at?

I really like the Volvo, but keep in mind my experience is severely limited. My trainer had a International Prostar so that is the only other truck I have driven. No APU's unfortunately, the truck is governed at 62 mph if you idle more than 10% of the time, 65 if less.

I am sitting at the Pilot on 95 north of Savannah waiting on a load. It seems like we have a good deal of freight in this area, several large companies that would logically ship lots of material.
