If you could improve 1 thing at Knight, what would that be?

Knight needs to treat their drivers with more respect and to get rid of their ridiculous no idle policy. I was not impressed at all with Knight one bit. Very very similar to swfit.

 

1. ancient qualcomm
2. no gps on said qualcomm
3. EXTRA paranoid safety department
4. treats drivers like #$%^ as said
5. no idle, which i wasnt aware of

 

Not enough MT trailers. They are the Kings of Drop and Hunt. And the Prince of Short Haul. Average load length is in the 400s.

 

Over 5 yrs, I averaged a new DM about every 3-4 mos. They hired young, recent college grads w/no transportation industry experience who needed a job; and who were optimistic and had good attitudes starting out, then lost the attitude and treated drivers as PIA's, then quit.

The fault in the change in their attitudes may be caused by some driver's whining, but mostly it was pressure from above that forced them to compromise, disregarding drivers as individuals, and ruining their overall work ethic!!

The driver's interface (their DM) is designed to be a burn-out job with high turn over as being the face as well as henchmen for upper mgmt...

And, when a new DM takes over, the drivers are all treated as rookies with their good driving history (safe, reliable, on-time deliveries) being lost and the drivers have to start over to re-establish themselves and their good reputations!!!

EDIT: btw, for the former military folks, I went trucking industry FIGMO 6 yrs ago........

Forgot my recommendation: When I started out in trucking in 1999, all DM's were 'former' drivers. Had but a few former drivers as my DM while at Knight---drivers can relate to drivers----snot-nosed college kids cant!! Plus, experienced former drivers know what is BS and know when (and have the guts) to push back at mgmt..

 

Icfd15, there were many red flags in the orientation mtg I encountered. No idle being one of them. A lot of the phx office staff including my recruiter had major, major attitude. The load length (miles) as well as I just didn't want to repeat my experience at swift, since knight is identical to swift in the way they operate.

 

Knight does not enforce a no idle policy. They would like you to stay under 10% idle time. If you do, you are governed at 65. If not, have fun at 62-63. They also do not want the trucks shut off at all at or below 20 degrees air temp. They do run the dinosaur Qualcomm, switching to the touchscreen qualcomms and testing out the zonar system now.
