Does anyone have info on a Knight subsidiary called Squire?

I recently called Knight's recruiting number to see if they accepted recent CDL graduates. The answer was yes, but only through a subsidiary company called Squire. I understand Squire is new and based out of Indianapolis. There's a five-day orientation before transitioning to a trainer and the road. As I understand, you must drive for Squire for at least three months before moving over to Knight.

It was on the front page of "KnightLine" our company newsletter. Where do they come up with these catchy titles ? LOL. It didn't say much. Squire was an existing company they purchased for the purpose of what you were told. Look Knight up in Indianapolis and someone there will be able to fill you in.

Thanks, DNA. Nice to meet ya', and possibly I'll get to meet you again. I've had additional conversation with Squire since posting, and I'm convinced that's where I want to go. I've been accepted into the program, and at this point I'm simply waiting on a date to report to orientation.

There were a number of reasons for making Knight/Squire my first choice - some personal, some not. I was impressed with their balance sheet relative to other companies. I was also impressed with their turnover rate relative to other companies. The length of training was a positive for me, and on a purely personal note I really like their trucks. :biggrin_255:

Of course, I've read the negatives, too. I don't think I've found any company that escapes those, but right now things are looking up!

If you're new to trucking, you'll hear pros and cons about every company out there. You'll learn soon enough what is a good fit for you. From my experience as a company OTR driver, Knight is one of the best. I have friends and family all over the country and the fleet manager (fancy word for dispatcher), always asks me where I want to go and then they send me there. I get time off anytime I want, like vacation with the kids in Oregon, getting to a close friend's funeral in New Mexico, or visiting my ailing father in Massachusetts.

The one caveat I have is their slow governed trucks, especially when running out across the Mountain Time Zone where the speed limit is 75mph.

Enjoy! It's one of the best jobs out there if you enjoy being on the road.

Here's a short follow-up to my question about Squire. I just finished my 4 months and will soon be transitioning to Knight.

As a Squire, you'll drive for one month with a trainer and then drive for three months on your own. There is no 'teaming' with the trainer. You'll do all the driving, and both of you go to sleep at the same time. You'll be taught how to float, back, log, drive through mountains, and you're required to make at least one trip to the Northeast. I did New York and delivered to the Bronks. This also seems like a good time to mention my trainer, Ryan Forbes. He's a million-mile 'Platinum' driver for Knight and throughout he was excellent.

All of Squire's equipment is new. I trained in a Pete 387 and moved into a new Volvo when I went out on my own.

Training pay is $400 per week. Once you get your own truck you'll be paid .29 cents per mile for trips of 500 miles or more. There are higher rates for shorter trips, and they reimburse you for trucking school at a rate of $50 per week.

After each month on your own or after each 10,000 miles (there was some fluctuation on this) your rate of pay increases one cent making it possible to reach .31 cents per mile. If you successfully complete three months on your own you'll be given a chance to drive for Knight. I understand the starting pay there is .34 cents per mile.

I consistently got over 2,000 miles per week. Despite the economic downturn, January was my highest month.

When I entered the trucking industry I was told to be weary of recruiters and what they might say or promise. To that end, I can only report that Knight/Squire has done everything they said they would do. I'm very happy with the training I received, and I'd easily make them my first choice again.

    Cheers!

Sounds like a pretty good deal. Ima do some looking into that. Thank you for the info and be safe.:biggrin_25525: And one more question, what speed are the trucks governed at, do they run you anywhere, and can you take the truck home with you. Thanks.

First to Double Three, your to kind and you were by far the easiest student. And to Drop'n'Hook... If the speed is all that is important and not the consistent miles and pay.... Well..... I have been here 13.5 years and will go nowhere else.
