Does anyone has any input on the O/O situation at Knight? How they tread you? Any choice of loads? How often you get home? How's the pay? Thanks

I worked for Knight out of Denver for about six months as a O/O .... all winter I ran Sd,Nd,Mt,Ut,Id and Co than as soon as the weather started to warm up nothing but Co to So Cal with heavey loads both ways while their company trucks would get the light loads. O and I did get to go to Houston the end of July and sit for 3 days waiting for a load. From there up to OK City sat for 2 more days before being offered a load to Houston and refused it (remember no forced dispatch) finally made my way to Wy than SLC than back to Denver to end my contract with them. The safty a^%$ole in Denver would never even give me answers about bad tires on trailers (picked up and had to have 21 tires on 18 trailers changed in a 2 month span cause I would not pull a trailer with tires not in conplance) So I say don't do it unless you want the s&%t runs and have to deal with crapy equipment.

All O/O have to use electronic logs and you don't get paid to look for empties. Also you aren't allowed to have a pet on YOUR truck from what I've been told.

Was Knight still trying to sell their used Volvos to O/O's? Used Volvos are not in demand due to their many misc. failures as opposed to Knight's old used Centurys of years ago. They started trading in used Centurys at about 600-700K miles/3 YO (when Freightliner gave them $45K credit trade-in toward a new one, and then with the huge inventory backlog, reneged on that deal), and sold their used Pete's with as little as 100K miles (when they went out of the 1 yr warranty; whereas Freightliner/Volvo had 3 yr warranties). The Pete's were a much better 'machine' than the Volvos, altho I liked the Volvos ergonomics/roominess. And with all the nasty places that Knight sold cheap freight service to, Volvos were better for getting into super-tight docking/loadings situations.

When Knight started selling their used Centurys and making O/O's out of former co. drivers, the regular co. drivers would sit waiting for a pre-plan, while the O/O's had 2-3 pre-plans on them to cherry pick from! And, until the O/O's turned down a pre-plan, it was not made available to the waiting/MT co. driver...

But even with that advantage, O/O's were defaulting on their trucks (not enuf miles + high payments) and I saw many of them sitting MT in Knight yards..:biggrin_25513:

I talked to some of them during my tenure there at Knight. Most of the ones that were "happy" lived in the truck. That's probably how most OO's at most of the mega junk haulers achieve any kind of financial gain. That would be a dismal pathetic existence IMO, living in truck.

It takes a 'certain' kind of person to be happy living in a truck! I wasnt one of them. I enjoyed the solace of OTR, socializing more so at truck stops at the end of the day, and gave up on the CB after 1-2 yrs of listening to 'jawers'. Cell phones and w-less laptops also helped stay in contact with friends & family. But I was single (the last 5 yrs, OTR didnt help my marriage) and my kids were grown---it is NOT for a family man with younger kids or a man with a stay-at-home wife; and if one is single, they will not meet ppl and reduce their chances of ever meeting that 'special' person and getting married!:biggrin_25513:

Blah Blah Blah. Im a o/o now. The only problem I have, is fuel surcharges, I was told Knight doesnt have fuel surcharges they have fuel protection prices, then I read in the trucker news the Mr. Knight himself in an interview, says, oh yar knight has a 5.3 % fuel surcharge to offset rising fuel costs. Durrrrrrr. whose lying here? no matter how you slice it we o/os are getting shafted bigtime.

Here's some of the reasons I wouldn't do O/O at knight even though I'm fairly happy as a Co. Driver at the moment.

    1) 60 cents per mile for deadhead/no fuel surcharge

2)Fuel protection/surcharge or whatever they are calling it is calculated on 6.5mpg. What you want to bet they are getting it based on the standard 6mpg from their customers?

    3) A charge to drop a load in a yard. I think it's $60 dollars for that, but don't quote me on it.
