In comparison to truck driving school it isn't that bad.

I'm not saying the whole deal isn't BS and doesn't suck. I'm just saying its not that big of a deal to hold me back if I really want to go work for a company. And yes I went and got mine so I could work for Landstar.

The haz-mat itself is not that difficult. It's the homeland security check that is a pain in the place you can't scratch in public. I have very high security clearance that allows me access to the holds of nucleur subs, into nucleur missle silos and reactor rooms at nucleur power plants. I travel on a U.S. passport. They had no way to access this information and only after the intervention of my senator did they get off thir butts and give me clearance. I went around with them for two months. My senator contacted them the day after I contacted him. Their clearance was post-marked the day after he contacted them.

Probably when you got yours you didn't have to go through this. I believe it was last year when they started this. Be prepared for aggravation at re-newel time.

I had the full TSA back ground check same as you. 10 finger fingerprinting BS same as you. In 10 days I had my clearance back.

And I don't believe your story of all your top secret clearances any more than the stories about a US Marshall coming along to save a poor truck driver from the clutches of the DOT man. But hey, it sounds good.

Fedextruck Read USA TODAY, April 29, 2008 issue FYI

Part of article:

"Fuel surcharges are a way for trucking companies to respond to increases in fuel costs. And now, shippers are paying more than ever in fuel surchages to get freight moved. Consumers are told prices on store shelves have gone up due to shipping and fuel prices.

"But where exactly is all that extra money going? To the truckers?
The answer is NO. For too long, brokers have taken money intended to pay for ever-rising fuel costs and lined their own pockets with it.........it exploits shippers, truckers and consumers."

Writing this because KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Check which companies rely on brokers and what they are doing to your money. It's illegal to do this, but it's one of those laws with no guts to it, it's not enforced. SO CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND COMPLAIN. Lots of times, not just once.

You put time on the road to make a few dollars at the end of the week, put some time into getting paid a fare wage. INSIST on your surcharge.
Make a lot of calls to your Senator and to your Congressman to state your case to give this law some teeth. Be your own best friend.

To the staffer who said I've made up my mind.. yes, I have. I don't want to have to borrow to meet my expenses and eat candy bars for dinner.
