    Landstar out of ATLANTA can I make money

    Got the cash for about a 40,000 tractor and thinking about going O/O but really concerned if there is much more money than Company. Any hints on how much one can make working for a company like landstar I could get my own trailer too I guess. Any info appreciated

    I hear ya just got into the trucking industry a year ago after spending twelve years as a fisherman in Alaska actually still am trying to get out but really cant afford to. Darn sure cant support my family on 3,000 a month as a company driver. I dont mind investing into something positive to make some money. I can do all general maintenance and good head on my shoulders. Really want to be able to make 65,000 per year or its not worth it to me. But is it really possible ?

    Depends. The system at L/S takes time to learn how to find good paying loads. The hardest part is knowing who to call. In all honesty L/S may not be best for an O/O starting out. Thats my opinion.

    appreciate the opinion please keep em coming. Maybe another company just heard L/S was good but I looked at the other companies and I figure .95 cpm after the expenses might as well be company! Guess I should have gone to college and become a doctor! HA HA HA

    Deep Water, maybe I'm not the one to give advice on LS since I'm not leased there. But I think I understand their system well enough to say this. "In my opinion if you don't have a few years under your belt running the road with whatever kind of trailer your thinking about pulling at LS, I would hold off and learn THAT segment of the industry. That way you can learn what areas freight moves and what area to stay out of. Even different times of the year dictates what freight is moving where". If you are ready to move, even without the experience maybe look at a company like Mercer that has a dispatch system for a year of two then make the change to LS. That way you will better know what rates are in different areas and what the best and worst traffic lane are. Just my opinion...

    Deep Water, One other thing. I too live in the Atlanta area. I had a flatbed leased to Jones Motor. I was able to get the driver home every weekend during the summer.
    The reason I put the truck at Jones Motor was, there approval process was quicker than LS. As many have said on the post LS takes a while and is very selective who they take. While at Jones we ran LS freight often. You will need to learn how loads are posted on these boards and how and from who these companies got that freight from. At times you will see the same loads on Jones, LS, Mercer, Ace Doran boards all at the same time. You will need to learn "Who's loads those are and who to call to get the best rate on that load." You can't learn that over night, and when you at a company like LS, or Jones, or Ace you are learning at your own expense. You don't have a dispatcher at these companies.

    Deep Water, Here is another thing I haven't seen posted here. If you go to the LANDSTARBROKER board, know this. Those are not the loads that a LS BCO sees when he is online looking for a load. The BCOs are looking on a completely different board. What you see at LS Broker is (as I have been told) excess, or lower rate, or non LS dedicated freight.
    So, I'm saying that to say this, what BCOs at LS look at is completely different from what an outsider like us, here tonight, would see. And the rate would be a little better on their boards.

    I drove for Landstar for 6 months, and I bought my own used 53 ft van trailer. I would not recommend getting your own van trailer, since you will lose out on all the
    drop and hook loads. You will have to pay insurance and maintenance on the trailer. You are better off pulling Landstar's van trailer. they pay all the trlr expenses and pay to have it washed.
