Landstar Inc. - Jacksonville, FL.?

Maybe somewhere downthe line I want to be a O/O with flat bed or step deck trailer. And when i was working down in Wilmington, NC In January, I saw maybe about 20 trucks and they all had Landstar written on them. Looking at their trucks was just soo mesmerizing. just wanted to know if you guys heard anything good or bad.

I was with Landstar 3 years ago and I had a hard time finding dry van truckloads that paid decent. Their flatbed or stepdeck loads seemed to be decent, though. The downside of Landstar is that it takes time to learn their system and find out which agents have the right loads. Landstar has no dispatchers so you are responsible for finding your own freight. Some like the system of finding their own loads, but it didn't work for me. You might be better off getting your own authority than leasing with Landstar.
Good Luck.

My husband currently drives for Landstar. He pulls a flatbed.I don't know anything about the dryvans. I help find loads for him while hes driving. At first its a nightmare. But you eventually get the system. Its not for everyone. And you need deep pockets to start imo.Everything is on you.If you run, you make good money. If you stay home you don't. Its up to you. Good luck in your endevors.

Re: Landstar-good or bad company

Just recently got some info on Landstar. My friend has been talking to a lot of their drivers to see what other companies are offering. The way you find your loads is on their website. The listings offer all the important details: weight, miles, surcharge, etc. They pay the fuel surcharge to you as soon as you select your load.

One of the cool things I liked was that once you select a pick up load, it automatically brings you to a page with pick ups in the area you are dropping of at.

One driver in particular told him that he never selects loads more than 26000 #, or less than 3 bucks a mile. Sounds pretty selective, but if it's possible, I'm all for it. I'll be getting their info packet.

It really sounds very similar to a lot of the brokerage websites I have encountered. I have my own authority, but I'm still learning the system. Not really ready to broker my own stuff.

Beargator.... There are some things in your post are not true to my knowledge. You may have been misinformed.
I currently use this load board. It does'nt automaticly take you to a new search you must search it yourself.
You must call the broker to get some info.
As far as 3.00ml loads their are some here and there. But usualy its all inclusive.Meaning it includes fsc and tarp, permits.Or oversized ,hzmat.
I do like the company.Go Ahead and get info from them.

You need to have all your own equipment.

Re: Landstar-good or bad company

As with everything, I take the info I was given with a grain of salt. I usually investigate a lot further before I do anything. I appreciate your reply! Do you lease on to them, or just use them for brokerage? I didn't think that leasing on to them would require your own equiptment (trailer). I do have my own tractor.

From what has been described to me, it sounds like the program I am referring to is the Business Capacity Owner.

Re: Landstar-good or bad company

yes, my husbands truck is leased to them.If you do not have your own trailer .then you will need to rent one of theirs.
You can not just use their agents.

my husband does flatbed. He had to have all the equip to secure the loads.(chains.binders, wood pieces) ect...

everyone the works for them driver wise is a "business capacity owner". Your truck is leased to them. You as a driver own your own business.(You in a sense are not their employee). You pick your own loads, go when you want. But everything is up to you to take care of Business wise.

Actually, from their website, it appears that you can use them as a brokerage. I made an account today, and signed up my truck. It allowed me to sort through the loads. I didn't really look too deeply, though, since I don't have my own trailer.

How much is a trailer rental? There's tons of flatbed loads here in Atlanta/W. GA area. I would prefer to run 53' dry van or reefer, though. Once I get some money put away, I will probably buy one.
