I have a Doonan 50'. It's 10' on top and 40' on the bottom, love it and I don't get the DOT on my back in northern ca towns for the length of the trailer, with a 53' they will not let you in without a ticket!
It's got the can locks 40' and two 20's and plenty of sliding winches, one thing I wouldnt be without are ramps, it's got two sets that act as load levelers. Ramps mean more equipment loads as opposed to 48k lbs of lumber you have to tarp and haul for $$$ less!
Oh and mine is a sliding rear axle that I run as a tandem in CA.
If I were to have a trailer built from scratch it would be a 50' but the rear axle would be no more than 40' from kingpin in the spread position.
Good luck which ever way you go.
