Nope, never heard of Landstar, one of the biggest trucking companies out there.

They only have owner operators, so its actually the driver who keeps up the maintenance on the truck.

However landstar does do DOT inspections every 120 days I believe..so the truck should be in pretty good condition.

The reasons I'm wanting out of OTR have nothing to do with Landstar.

The biggest negative I hear out of a lot former Landstar O/Os or wanna bes that can't get qualified is that they take too much of a percentage. I suppose that is debatable, but they have to make some thing for what they do as well. They are the ones with the opperating authority, and that take all the risk on the money for the loads not me. I never have to worry if a customer is going to not pay. I get a settlement every monday just like clock work. When I was independant I worked a lot lot harder for the same revenue, and even got jacked out of $2400 for a load delivered that I never got paid for. The company filed bankruptcy between the time I had picked up the load on wednsday and delivered it on Friday.

One big difference with Landstar is that you are your own dispatcher. If you get a load you don't like, or it goes to a part of the country you don't want to run in, guess whose fault that is?

so much info, but none i feel comfy with. we are husband and wife team our truck is 10 years old. we just ran for ups o/o division. worked 3 month to get hired and lasted 4 weeks. yikes. great company to make lots of money, but you hurry hurry run faster, than sit. micro management the worst we ever had.just not the way we want to live. so we are looking at landstar, but dont know if we could do ok, just repasted this into you box, new to this site. we can't afford another mistake. the % is lower now than what evry1 else is talking about. our truck is 10 years old. we been husband & wife team for 12 years o/o for 11. all those deductions sound realy confusing, do they realy teach you how to figure out what you make?

I have been with landstar for over ten years now, all i will say about is you need to be a businessman as much or more than a driver, you have to be able to sell yourself to the agents.

all the decisions are made by YOU!!

Landstar is different and don't worry about micro management there is very little interaction with Jacksonville unless you screw up one way or another.

Most people that don't make it with Landstar are not willing to do the selling of themselves to the agents, and there are a lot that don't but if you are willing to work at it you can make a pretty good living with them.

Landstar is going thru some issues with their business model at the moment but if what I heard in Jacksonville in Jan. come about things should smooth out a bit this year.

bottom line if you are willing to work at it you can make it, if you just want the freight to fall into your lap without doing anything for it landstar will not be the company for you.

I agree....I never leased on with Landstar when I was an O/O but I did drive for an agent for the better part of 7 years....If you can learn the "system" quickly and basically get in with an agent or agents you should be ok....but be advised the first few months as your learning and running the "system" can be very hard....Looks like I'm gonna be going back to the agent I drove for (almost re-qualified now) so if I can be of any help pm me, I try to help as best I can..
